My MPG has gone from 22-24 to 19-21, and I can't remember the last time I saw a little puff of smoke from the rear. I think my DoD has turned itself off. Is this possible, and will it harm the engine?

IIRC, a MIL will disable the DOD.

I know it will, if it's a misfire on one of the DoD cylinders. However, I'm not getting any.

I deactivated DOD on my 2012 suburban and gas mileage did not change.

I deleted it because of the issues it creates.

I don’t think it can turn itself off without a MIL.

I bought a Range device to deactivate.

I think a check engine light will turn off dod/afm. I can't remember what people typically unplug to get the dod/afm to turn off. When I bought my GXP, I would see poof's of smoke in my rear view mirror from time to time. I turned off the dod/afm and it stopped. at like 120,000 miles I got low oil pressure, ended up being the pickup tube o ring in the oil pan. I also have a lifter fail which necessitated a new cam and lifter set. that happened like 30,000 miles after dod/afm was turned off.

my gas mileage pretty much never changed the whole time.

That smoke will eventually carbon up the rings and score the cylinders causing low compression. I would either by a Range device or a tuner to delete it. My oil consumption went down to zero after I bought and installed a Diablo tuner. You can use the stock 87 octane tune to save money on gas and just delete the DOD. I would do it before the engine is damaged.
