Installing a Coolant Filter
sweet, I am going to be doing this mod soon. well maybe more of a fix than a mod.
It doesnt slow the coolant flow enough to affect anything, mine still runs the same temps. You just have to check it regularly. When I first started using it I had to clean it about every other day. Now, that all the other crap it out of there, I can go a month or longer without the need to clean it. Its worth it to me.
There are more sophisticated coolant filters out there, some that even replenish the additives in the coolant. How many of you knew there were additives in the coolant?
For the money, the Tefba filter is perfect. I know this; I wont have another car without one on it.
I went to buy some more coolant for my GP today during lunch, becuase I was going to flush my system, cause I had a leak in my resevoir hose, which caused air to get into the system (I think), becuase there was dex-crap all over the radiator cap. (I know it's not the stop-leak chips, becuase I flushed the system many times before, so I know what it's supposed to look like)...
anyways, I bought this new Prestone coolant/anti-freeze, that says its a new extended-life formula (5 year 150,000 mile), that is compatible/mixable with any color coolant. Judging by the picture, this stuff is yellow. Anyways, it says it's safe for aluminum components and radiators too...
Anyone try this stuff? I'm going to flush, and use this stuff and see if it runs any cleaner.
For you wealth of knowledge sir you are the winner.
What does the winner receive Bob?

After seeing that I'm interested in getting one of these. Scotty, what size fitting do we need? Did you install yours in the hose that goes to the thermostat housing?
Lee, are you running green or dex-cool in yours? Also is there anything special you need to do, or is flushing it the same as flushing the radiator on a silverado? Is there is any diagrams/write ups you guys have that would make it easier for me? You know like the chilton manuals, the are my best friend.
If I tried to tell you what size you needed, Id be guessing. All I know to do is measure the hose I.D.
As for the installation, yes, it goes in the upper radiator hose or the one that goes to the thermostat housing. Coolant comes from the thermostat to the radiator, so the screen in the filter needs to face the radiator. It only (the mesh screen) goes in one way, so if you get it wrong you'll have to turn the filter around.
Another good thing about that filter is now you can fill your radiator from there and reduce if not eliminate the need to bleed the system. Since that hose is higher on the radiator than where the radiator cap is, you can nearly eliminate all the air in the system.
I know a couple of you are interested in the filters. Would anyone be interested in waiting to order and let me see if I could put together a group buy on this? I had contacted the manufacturer at one time to do just this, but the interest, though high to start with, diminished when I had put everything together.
So unless you guys are just in a super hurry to order, I can see if we can get a cheaper price by ordering several of them.
1 1/4 is the size we need . well that is what my auto parts store said . anyways i ordered mine today ! i talked to the guy about a possible group discount for our forum he said if we get a order of 10 or more he would be willing to get us a little bit better of a price . i paid $70 shipped . hopefully the rest of you can get a order for 10 so you guys can get a better price !
sorry syn. didnt see your last post . i talked to him before i read that my bad
I'm running green at the moment, but will most likey switch back to dex at the next complete flush.
People have drained the radiator pulled the front knock sensor, removed the Tstat and used a garden hose to flush. Then filling with straight water repeated a couple of times until it is clear when drained. That is a readers digest version as I recall the write-up being rather lengthy.
My radiator is probably really bad, im just gonna buy a new one this summer, i bet that will make it run alot cooler.
