My boost bypass solenoid needs to be replaced. Can you explain the purpose of the solenoid and what it does? I'm contemplating whether I should replace it now or later. The car runs good but wondering if I'm losing boost etc.

Yup, at partial throttle it closes to allow the supercharger to build boost. It fully opens to vent the supercharger boost in situations like reverse, active ABS or TCS, etc. It also stays open during light driving and idling to save on gas among other things. When it fails, it normally fails to close all the way (or at all) under boost so yes you should be loosing boost if it's bad.
You can bypass the bypass by plugging the vacuum line that goes into it from the left side, and unplugging the connector. This is not a good idea because your supercharger will be be stuck "on", destroying fuel economy and creating excessive wear and tear.
unplugging the boost bypass valve solenoid does not bypass the valve, it only disables it in low traction and reverse. the bypass valve should be replaced if its bad. I had a bad one where the valve came unmounted from the plate and it caused a vacuum leak. it didn't cause a big problem, but the car didn't run as good as now does. you might be able to find a good used one pretty cheap. and if you get one that does not have mounting bracket for the solenoid its no big deal, just do the solenoid delete and call it good.
You could always never care about economy or the "wear and tear" and just leave the solenoid plugged in and remove the line from the right side of it.
Mucho boosto all the time.
