    The past few days I have started scanning a bit more and enabled the plugins on torque to see how much I actually am knocking. I am seeing anything from 4-6* under load and up to ~9* at wot. My intake is really short and intake temperatures are in the 40-50* range so I will be changing that and hoping to see that drop. I am running 94 octane on a full stock setup, 99 GTP. Any ideas?

    sounds normal to me. mine has the same KR bone stock. up to 7.9 wot. 2.8's and such under light to med throttle.

    getting a tune can help with the kr. and pinch out a few more pony's.

    they all knock from the factory. thank GM for the great tune. yes its ok cause its what it is.

    a overkill tune would help it out some i bet. (being your from up north) people who are stock get his canned tunes are are quite happy. wakes the car up some. dont expect a huge difference but it should run stronger. and have little to no kr.

    I'd say a tune wouldnt help much, maybe lowering the timing 1-2 degrees would take away some but in reality they run rich from the factory already and tune can't do much about it.

    I'd say some flow mods like exhaust and some better spark plugs would help reduce the KR. But it's stock and what you see is pretty normal.

    So just on the topic of knocking, when I am seeing 4.7* at WOT (I am modded), I shouldn't be concerned for chipping pistons? What is an unacceptable amount of knock?

    If you're making more than stock boost, then you are just making is easier to have something let go.

    But really, an knock can be considered bad.

    No knock is acceptable really. And a tune would def help your knocking situation. Sure headers would help some but from stock to headers i dropped from like 8 * to like 5* and then when street tuned im seeing only blips of maby 1-2 kr on shifts and in 3rd+ gear.
    If your knocking your losing power and potentially destroying your engine. Its not as big of a deal on a stock car but me personally would rather get a good tune to like Scotty said free up some ponys and eliminate it completly. Also if your going to get it tuned you might as well do it right and buy a wideband.

    Okay. That is the highest it has ever been and that was only once. I usually only get up to 2* maximum before I let go.

    Any knock is bad knock but stock cars do tend to knock. Not a huge deal but ideally you want to try eliminate it, headers or a downpipe will benefit you well.

    Personally, I put a ZZP 2.5" downpipe on my stock 99GTP engine and did a tune up, (plugs and wires), and ran 93 octane and I saw 0° of knock except ocassional 6.9° blips for about 0.6 seconds at WOT when it would shift. But every engine is different.
    Unlucky for me, however, I think the car was sorta chipped when I bought it but had a lot of power. I found out it had a lean issue and about 11k miles after I bought it my engine blew. Went through spark plugs like no other o.O

    May not be a bad idea to rent or buy a tool/camera to look at your pistons with. I bought a little camera/endoscope off of Amazon for like $20 that I saw my piston's problems with. Althought probably not necessary, however may be worth it to keep the idea around

    Two different questions I think...

    Driving stock with knock? And what to do about it?

    Stock motor with stock tune will handle knock unless you're beating the hell out of it. It's factory dialed down to keep the car from coming back to the dealer. As mentioned, dumping fuel to keep things cool! Lol...

    If you are worrying about it because you want to beat on it and go faster, well then, check the safely modding your 3800 thread. There's plenty you can do to reduce the knock and make the driving more fun while keeping the engine quazy safe. Just remember the golden rule:

    FAST/RELIABLE/CHEAP

    You can only have two of those three at any one time, so chose wisely!
