My bro told me about a fellow employe at his work also has a gtp (03 i think). He said on his car there is a little button on the shifter and when pressed a light comes up on the mpg display saying "performance shift" Well my 01 has that display but obviously no button on the shifter.

Ive seen new shifters with this button, and if im not mistaken you need a tuned pcm to enable this feature.

So, if i wanted to get this going I would need a tuned pcm, new shifter, and have the shifter installed? If I can recall that shifter is very fun to install.

Am I missing something our did I just answer my own question?

Also how does this feature work? What does it do for you?

    Thank you!

IIRC PS was available from 97-00. basically u'd need to have the knob wired to the pcm and i think needs to be set optional to be turned on.

just put it on a switch that you put wherever you want. then you dont have to buy and install a knob.

... Is there a tutorial for this?

And can this be done on a stock pcm?

My pcm cannot be tuned. I had a friend try to tune it, and it gives an error when trying to dump the fw.

Also, what does the performance shift do? (Im doing some searching on it right now)

Why can't your PCM 'be touched'?

Why would you have to flash it to wire up the Perf. Shift?

And why would you even want the Perf. Shift button?

I do not know the whole details on why my pcm cannot be touched.
I went to got3800 meet and someone there was doing free tunings. I do not know what equipment he used. When he was attempting to dump the firmware from the pcm to his laptop, it gave him an error. I cannot remeber what it said, but there diffinetly was an error. The program allowed him to continue dumping the firmware, but it would not allow him to change any settings.

His explination was that my pcm was a v1.1? Or maby it was because it was a particular pcm that would not allow it to be changed.

    Any of this make sense?

    -

On that write up to enable performance shift, near the bottom, it stated the settings that you need to enable. I also read people responses and they (i think) stated that you need to have it enabled on your pcm.

Is this true? Is it already enabled, but just not wired up?

    -

I would like to enable the PS function because it claims it will give you better shifts. My car pulls great around 3-3 1/2 K, but when it gets near red line it just gets real loud and doesnt really move. Plus it takes at leaste 3 seconds to change into the next gear. I know this isnt a race car transmision but I would like to enable this feature. Plus it gives me something to do on the weeked

So basically, Will I need to flash my pcm to enable PS?

get a dhp 1.0 from 3800performance and you will have it as well as a better running car. either that or buy a tuner.

for those who have the PS...how often do you use it? I just thought it tightens the shift points. is it safe to just leave it on..or when you need to get up and go quick?
    My car doesn't leak oil,

I leave mine on pretty much all the time unless I am driving for gas mileage. It is safe to leave it on at all times.

I got a knob too if you need one man

I have tested this theory and there is really not much difference in leaving performance shift on. I leave it on all the time...plus you never know when you need to beat the crap outta it
