So I sent my heads to be ported and polished... They also cut the heads back to 100% straight.

Problem is, when they cut them, My markings for front & rear head got wiped out. Now I don't know which one is which.
They have separate numbers stamped in them, does anyone know which one is which by those numbers?

P.S. Have been googling this for hours to no avail!

But I have the valves, springs, retainers, rockers and push-rods all marked to a specific cylinder on each head.

Isn't it pretty important to put the valve-train back on the same cyl head?

The only thing that the orentiation on all that kind of matters is the valves, which you should be getting re-ground anyway.

I was just about to lap them when I noticed my head markings were gone... If I carefully re-seat with lapping compound, you think it will be ok?

You have the heads off, I would just take them back to the machine shop and have them valve-jobbed. Also get the valves back-cut. Lapping is kinda half assing it.

Valve guides are also probably worn. Liners would be a good idea.

Lapping them would prob work, you are just so close to doing it the right way.

Every set of 3800 heads I've ever taken in needed a valve job badly. Do it..smile and enjoy it.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

Only the valves, rockers, pushrods, and lifters need to be oriented. If you have new pushrods, you don't need to worry about their orientation and you don't have to worry about that for re-using the lifters (roller only) either. These heads don't have hardened valve seats either. That's why you need a valve job.

Thanks for the insight. Heads & valves will be ready for pickup tomorrow. I have new compcam lifters going in after a good soak in oil.
