Ok - I have a new CPS and I'm going to install it tomorrow (Thursday). I've been reading that I need a special puller to get the pulley off the crankshaft. Is this true? I have a regular puller I've used in the past for taking pulleys off alternators, water pumps, etc. Why will it not work in this case?
I MUST get this car running by end of day on Thursday so if I need to go out and get a special tool please let me know asap.
That puller will not work.
The outside of the dampener is attached to the inside with rubber.
A normal puller will damage a dampener by putting stress on the rubber and possibly tear it apart.
A harmonic balancer/steering wheel puller is the type you need. The bolts for our balancers seem to be odd and not typically included in most sets.
M6 x 1.00 x~75mm , you can use 1/4 fine pitch as it is close..but it's not exact.
Thank you for the information about the correct type of puller needed and the size bolts needed. I got one from Autozone this morning and, as it didn't come with the correct bolts, I stopped by Home Depot and picked up 3 1/4 - 20 3" bolts and washers - they didn't have 6M long enough. Less than $25 paid for everything so I'm happy with that.
I referred to the write-up by BillBoost37 and everything went smoothly. Got the new CPS installed with no difficulties.
The result - engine is running normally. My problem is fixed. Thank you all for your help during this. You have been a wealth of information. This makes my dear wife very happy because we will be able to leave for our trip tomorrow as planned.
Now if only I could find out why my ABS light and SRS light come on frequently .... and why the transmission takes its time to shift to 2nd gear .... Projects for another day I think!
The lights are due to the connection at the hubs or the pigtails leading to them most commonly.
The trans.. it probably just does it to annoy your wife.
Glad that fixed it up.
LOL - Thank you
