Search bar is your friend.
I've seen MSD's start having trouble keeping up with high rpm spark demand in a month from purchase. Typical is to start looking for high rpm misfires after about a year and when you've pulled all your hair out... you test the coils to find out they are breaking down at high rpm.
Stock.. cheap, easy to wipe clean and better than MSD's.
MSD 3800 coils = Fail!
I try telling customers all the time at work when they're looking for aftermarket coils, GM ignition systems are very strong and on our cars you really wont find an improvement from the stock ones. People seem to have a really hard time understanding that in our case, aftermarket is a downgrade. In a lot of people's minds, everything "aftermarket" is superpowered for race car action.
There was actually a kid today asking me about MSD's for his GP and I told him stick with the stockers, MSD will be a downgrade for you... and he kept just repeating, "but Im looking for an upgrade." After awhile trying to explain why it's a bad idea, I just shook my head and let him have his way, lol.
Fribo... say what I typed above. About them breaking down and not keeping up with demand at higher rpms. If they are going to listen...that is good solid info.
as someone who has the MSD coils, DO NOT WASTE your money. i have a set i am running and they work great, but no better then stock. i have had them for years now and no problems. from what i have seen there are 2 diff designs to these coils... some look like stock coils and the ones i have are more boxy. either way, the stock system was strong enough to power cars into the 8's in the 1/4 mile!
the only reason i have them is, i got them with a GTP parts car. they work so i am happy. i would never buy them myself. Stay With Stock!
Supra guys go nuts for LQ9 coils.
high output vortec 6000.
Strange looking, but pretty cool:
