So I went to the dealership to ask why my check engine light was on. When the mechanic came out he told me he found an LARGE EVAP VENT VALVE LEAK and FUEL CAP LEAK the code for this is P0455. Know my question is can this be just because of the cap and not actually the Evap vent valve. And how much it would be to replace because the dealership is charging me 40 dollars for the gas cap and 50 dollars evap vent valve, and with labor it all comes out to be 350 dollars. While i could probably find all this cheap at autozone. I need some opinions please. Should i go to the dealership and pay there or is it easy enough to change it my self.

Well the gas cap certainly isnt going to cost you $40 at Autozone. As for the Evap vent valve, I dont even know where thats at, so I'll be no help there. For the sake of arguement, however, I would replace the cap first then see what you get, the gas cap could be all there is to it.

The only thing that i know of that would cost that much that is related to the evap system would be the EVAP purge valve. Wich is basicly a small air pump. If this is your problem it's about a 10 minute change. Then again it may be something in the gas tank....wich would lead to the labor charges...but then agin book time can be way off on little things like this...Wonder how much labor they charge for the gas cap

Ive noticed something in recent weeks regarding labor times. AllData publishes that information and for warranty work the labor time is one thing, and for non-warranty work, in most cases its nearly double the warranty time.

Now I ask, how in hades does something take two times longer when its NOT under warranty than when it is. What changed?

Thats cause the factory usually only pays half of book time for warranty work, that's why techs like non-warranty work better

Have some disable the code and don't worry about it any longer.
