Hi my check engine light just came on today.
I want to point out that yesterday I replaced my fuel level sending unit yesterday. and added a CAI last Saturday.
Anyone have any idea on if what i did has anything to do with this? I need to get my emissions done soon and can't with the CEL light being on!!
I know it might have been a loose gas cap but I doubt it, would it reset after I tighten it?

Since you replaced the sender, you may have caused a leak on the tube that goes into the top of the pump. Remove the tube and check the o-ring inside of the connector. If the o-ring looks good you could put a little silicone lube on the tube before reconnecting. This will help it seal. Make sure to either clear the codes with a scanner or disconnect the battery for 15 minutes. Drive for 100 miles or so and see if DTC reappears.
P0440
Reference: OBD-II Trouble Code: P0440 Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction
This indicates that a part of the EVAP control system is no longer fuctioning correctly. The EVAP system consists of many parts, including (but not limited to) the gas cap, carbon canister, fuel lines, purge valve, and other hoses. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.
Symptoms
You likely won't notice any drivability problems.
Causes
A code P0440 could mean one or more of the following has happened:
- The gas cap is not installed or working properly
- The purge solenoid has failed
- The canister is plugged and not working properly
Possible Solutions
With a P0440 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:
- Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the code, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
- Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses
- Inspect for damaged or disconnected hoses around the Evap purge solenoid
- Check and/or replace the sensor
- Check and/or replace the purge valve
- Have a professional use a smoke machine to detect leaks

Thanks for that write up. I actually just checked the top of the fuel pump and the evap line wasn't all the way "clicked" on!
Now to reset it, I can just unplug the neg. for 15 minutes? I don't have to go to Autozone?

Just remove the positive battery terminal for 15 minutes and you're good to go.

Hmm nope "service engline soon" light appears right when car is started.
I really have a feeling that it was caused by the evap fuel line not being all the way attached. Should I try and get the light reset tomorrow?

Yea, take it to the auto parts store like Advance or Autozone and let them do it.

Disconnect battery cables for about an hour.

I'm just gonna leave them disconnected till the AM when I leave for school, doubt it'll do anything but, gotta try!

It's worth a try.
Also you can get a cheap scanner from Advance. They're about 50 bucks or so and they have an erase function.
Popular brand is Actron.

Very true, I can just buy a reader from Advance for $50 then return it even a few days later, i won't need it in the future...i hope hah

Well I left the battery cables disconnected overnight, put them back on this morning, started up the car and no CEL!!!
And it didn't come back on today when I drove either!
