My car does not want to go. When I start it, it will idle at around 600rpms then kick up to 1000, then go back down. All within 10 sec. When I put it in gear, it sometimes runs slightly rough but sometime good. When I drive it, if I ease into the gas like a grandma, it is fine. But when I put my foot on the gas like normal (no hurry), it craps out again and cuts out, & idles rough.
My check engine light has been on since I got the car (years ago) it said it was the O2 sensor. Never fixed it. So, if it is, how do I know which one it is?? Someone else suggested the MAP sensor. What is that? How do I know what is wrong with my car? I got all my new body work done in May & haven't been able to drive it since. HELP! I'm broke and dying to go to Branson.
My friend has an old Bonneville with the same motor(-SC), wrecked but good motor, can I put that O2 on my car to see if thats the problem? Thanks yall

If the pcm is saying it is the 02 then id bet my money on it that that is the problem. Sure just change out the 02 sensor from your friends car and reset the code and enjoy much better gas miliage.

A map sensor is a manifold absoulute pressure sensor. In other words it measures boost for your car.If your map sensor was bad your boost level probably would not show up on your dic display.I have never personally seen a map sensor cause the problems that were stated above.

And if the pcm says it is the o2 sensor in bank 2 sensor 1 then you have other problems. The bank 1 sensor 1 is the 02 sensor that is in the rear header. The bank 2 sensor 1 is the o2 that is in the cat. The one in the cat is strictly to monitor the cat to see if it is performing correctly and will not cause any problems if it were to go bad.

I'd just spend the money and get a new O2 sensor for the front (the one in the manifold). There only $70 locally. If you have time go to sparkplugs.com and order a Denso for your car with coupon code "dodgetalk", that should run you about $45 shipped and you'll have it in 3 days.

If the code has been up as long as you said, it definatly needs changed out. Good maintence procedure is to replace your O2 sensor ever 80,000 miles or so anyway.

If you can't get the sensor out easily, I have a special socket that makes getting it out fairly painless (within reason). I'd hit it with some PB before attempting to remove it, i'd bet its rusted in there good...

    Thanks guys!!!
Shawn, good maintenence to me is oil change and the occasional plug/wire change. haha Don't fix what aint broke. I've had the TA since it 30k miles on it and the Check Engine light has always been on because the O2 sensor. So, I figured, it runs fine, I must not need it. To me, 30k mi is still a new car. right.
TDC you lost me on the whole bank thing???
    What is a DENSO?
    Thanks still!!!!!

The "bank thing" is just discussing your different oxygen [O2] sensors on your exhaust system.

-Bank 1 sensor 1 is the O2 sensor on your rear exhaust manifold.
-Bank 2 sensor 1 is the O2 sensor on your catalytic converter [aka cat].

If the one on your catalytic converter is giving you a code you may have a bad cat if im not mistaking. [can anyone corroborate this?] Your symptoms are smiler to a bad cat. I beleive a bad fuel filter would also give you a smiler problem although most likely not the case because of your code.

Also Denso is the company where you can get your O2 sensor from. Iron Indian is giving you a site, a name brand and a coupon code so you can order an O2 sensor online for cheaper then local stores.
