Hi there, I am almost ready to pull the motor out but I am hoping for some advise if I should pull the motor and transmission from car or easier to disconnect the transmission from the motor and just hoist out the motor???

If someone could advise what they think the best way would be ?

overall i would say it would be a little easy to uninstall and reinstall the tranny a motor togeather. lineing the two up in the engine compartment gets a little tricky.

I'd suggest you look up posts in teh How to on pulling engine etc. If you search on my posts, I'd like to think you'll do it the easiest way possible. I'm a bit biased though

Engine by itself is easier than trans with it for someone doing it for the first time. Pulling the trans with it requires a little less work in the engine bay, but it's a tight fit and an engine leveler is key to dropping it in w/o issues
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

tks for the quick reply's guys. I took a look around and searched engine removal and lots talk about removing both and I found instructions for removing both which I can use for everything except for the part where I need to disconnect the engine from the tranny.

I can't seem to find yet a description of how the engine gets disconnected from the transmission. Would love to save some hassle and leave the transmission in ... Could I trouble someone to explain it if possible on this thread for me ??

I am no expert but I did just pull and reinstall my motor.

My advice would be to pull the motor by itself. It's pretty tight going in and out so I think that the addition of the trans would just add difficulty to it. It's just that much more weight and things that you have to watch out for going in and out. So I think that the trans would make it even tighter front to back with the radiator in and the downpipe there.

Once I had the motor out I put a support across to hold the trans. Then I was able to push the car in and out of the garage as needed.

I can say that this site has a lot of info on the job and the job really isn't that bad. You just have to be kind of creative in your searching because some of the best info does not pop up from just putting in something like "pulling motor".

    good luck.

3 bolts from flex plate to torque converter need to come out. Then about 4 bolts on bell housing to motor inserted from the drivers side toward the passenger side need to come out. Then there is one final bolt on the bell housing coming in from the passenger side to the drivers side. This one is on the backside of the motor toward the windshield.

To get to the last bolt I jacked up the car and removed the right wheel. Supported the trans and removed the bracket going from the trans to the motor. Then you have to look through the wheel well between the motor and the trans all the way to the bell housing. You will see one bolt there and that is the one you want. The knock sensor hanging down on the back of the motor may obscure your view a little bit but if you use a flash light you can see it.

You will need 3 feet of extension and I used a universal. Then you have to almost do it by feel. When the socket locks on there - bust that baby loose and remove it.

If you look at the link below there is some pictures of a guy that made a trans bracket for his engine stand. It has nothing to do with what you are doing except that the you can see in the first picture where the b***h bolt is located. In the first picture the hole just to the left of the hand written "8" on the tranny is where the bolt is located.

Like I said in a previous post. When you put the motor back in, use a spare jack and jack up the differential (passenger side) of the trans before putting in the motor. Make it level with the sub frame and it will allow you to drop it in a lot smoother. It will allow you to get past the torque converter and slide right in.

Also.. when putting in the new motor, put an OLD oil filter on it. You will probably dent it up trying to put the motor back in. Or just take it off.

Helpful pics album is good, as is build up misc.

Here's the diff to engine bracket

Once that's out then you can pull the rear bolt

If you have questions on bolt sizes etc. ..well, most of them are listed in that how to that I linked.

well the motor is out now ! Found the clunking I believe was from the connecting rod bearing is shot.. I took a pic of the rod before I removed the cap. will try and post.

The top of the bearing was still all in tact, and the crank is still smooth.. Any thoughts if I change the bearing, cap and clean up the surfaces will the motor hold out for a bit ???

any thoughts you can throw out as to what I should do next and if just a new bearing would work ?

    Tks,
    Shaun

    Shaun,

This has been tried by many and the 99% result is about 200-500 miles before the bearing goes out again, if not worse. A used longblock is the common fix as it's the most cost effective.

    car-part.com

    Keep in mind that
    97-03 Grand Prix GTP
    96-03 Bonneville SSEi
    96-?? Riviera (with Vin 1)
    96-03 Park Ave Ultra
    04-?? Monte Carlo SC'd
    04-?? Impala SC'd

All share the same motor. If you swap the rear exhaust manifold, and a couple of engine mount brackets and maybe an evap line or two...it's an easy swap.

The GP SC motor from 04-08 can also be swapped in fairly easily.
