I don't know much about brand differences, I'd check out bobistheoilguy.com for that.

I can say a little about the 3800 though. The difference between reg and synthetic oil is so dramatic, so incredible that it's hard to put into words. I'd rather run used synthetic than new reg oil. GM could have saved themselves millions in warranty claims and earned a better reputation just by putting a 'synthetic only' oil cap on the car. I have a short list of making the 3800 the best motor ever made but that's another story...

THe 3800 seems to enjoy thin oil. Cars lube better and I made more on the dyno going thinner.

Well yeah it matters for me because It would be something I would look into. The RP would stay foamy fro up to 10 minutes after I shut my vehicle off. If mobil 1 was doing the same thing it would definitely change my outloook on the quality of RP. And I would probably start doing some more research. Which I probably will do anyways. If its just bubbly while the engine is runnin its somewhat understandable as it being heavily aggitated. But if its staying bubbly or foamy after the engine has been off then its something to look into.
Make me curious if the foaming and bubbling is cause from the detergents or what, cause I really dont think bubbling and or foaming is supposed to happen.

I dont know if the 0w30 is something id be interested in. i guess if its a bit thinner itd be ok for winters here. I frequently see -25-30 celcius here

Depends on whos 0W-30 you're running.

If its castrol syntec, its thicker than their 5W-30 and 10W-30.

Make you check the actual viscosity both cold and hot.

0W-20 was not a typo either.

0w-30 was a typo on my part.

Lol, I know this... Been driving for almost 35 years... Too many different cars to list, but maybe its just my old school brain!

Burning or losing oil = "BAD"

Never a good thing and certainly not a situation to have such a cavalier attitude towards, I.e., geeeeee its ok to burn a little between changes. I've never, ever, had an engine do that which caused me problems. Only those burning/losing oil were the ones that eventually had issues.

Just saying...

I wouldn't hypothesize over it, if you'd like to keep it fresh (engine) I would find out what the cause of loss is and take care of it.

coolone, Its clearly an oil issue if its only burned off royal purple and not the mobil 1.

I talked to a local mechanic last night. He is a certified RP dealer(only shops around here that carry all RP products and not just the oil). He actually said a few years ago Royal Purple sent him a notice about their oil breaking down quicker than its supposed to. So it must actually be a brand/formulation issue.

Found a half decent test

They rank the top 10 as follows
1. AMSOIL
2. BP Visco 5000
3. Mobil 1 5w50
4. Mobil 1 0w40
5. Hi-Tec HTO
6. Shell Helix Ultra
7. Royal Purple
8. Castrol R
9. Castrol SLX
10. Torco


Kinda suck they didnt use the same weight oils in the test. But so far its the best one Ive found

I've been running that 0w 30 mobile 1 full synthetic advanced fuel economy with a wix filter. I would recommend visiting the great wall of oil at walmart and you can't go wrong. As far as filters are concerned check out this site.
