whats up ? I am new to the site and just bought a 98 gtp coupe. I have noticed a faint oil burning smell and noticed it seems to be wet under the valve cover. I have read they are recalled for this reason. Is this true ? Thanks.

sadly the recall covers the front cover only, and if you want to do the back one your self they only sell gaskets with 2 in the package, so if its something you think you can do , do it, if not let the dealer do the front for free, i wouldn't pay the dealer to have them do the rear tho, they charge to much. a local shop should be a lot cheaper.
When I first got mine I called the dealer about it. Gave them my vin and they said it was done already. It was leaking again so I did all the upper gaskets at once.. better safe than sorry.
Its the valve cover gasket right thats the problem, not the head gasket? I know these cars also had issues the lower intake manifold gasket as well so I wonder If should just do it while its torn apart.
Correct, it is the valve cover gasket. Head gaskets on 3800s tend to last longer than most expect them too. It would save time doing the lower intake gaskets at the same time while you are already dug into it. Make sure to get the FelPro valve cover gaskets and new grommets, they should be either blue or orange. Also, make sure the intake gaskets you get are the aluminum set. Last, but not least get FelPro supercharger gasket as well. Garlocs and other paper gaskets are junk, even with sealant.
they put in a different holder for the plug wires too dont they?
at least they will stop sending that post card in the mail if you do. i keep getting it in the mail and its starting to annoy me.
^I have a stack of them in my GTP's glove box, as well as the GF's GTP.
I did the valve covers LONG ago on both our cars. Also did the injector and feed and return line o-ring replacement.
Personally, I do not want any idiot from the local dealership under ANY of my hoods playing mechanic. Being a ASE Mechanic doesn't mean they know what they are doing when working on a car...its just a fancy label. I doubt they can put stuff back the way it should be on a stock car, let alone a modified car. I would love to take my car in there, just to see them work around the cog belt set up on my supercharger, and get it back together when they are done. LOL
