I had the rear main seal plate off my engine and when I went to put it back on, I noticed that the bolts had hard, almost plastic like stuff at the shoulder of the bolts. I also noticed that the holes in the plate were conical. Is this material just some sort of RTV?

The plastic helps line up the rear engine cover to center it.

I tend to feel that the plastic allows the bolts to loosen over time and cause seeping at the gasket. I typically add thread locker to the tips of the bolts if I'm installing it.

Hmmm.... some of mine were pretty messed up. Go to the dealer to get replacements?
Thanks for the tip. Would Loctite blue be good for that or should I go red?

As you know the torque spec is low. I used blue IIRC, maybe red. Anything would help them from possibly backing out.

Less than half of mine were ugly, so I reused them and found it lined itself up from the few it had left. Up to you on picking up new ones. That's to the best of my guessing ability what they were for.

Thanks for the info Bill. I found out from my dealership that the pieces are used on the assembly line to line up the cover. They are not needed after this and cannot be ordered. According to Alldata, the centering of the cover should be done by taking off the oil pan and laying a straight edge across the block. There should not be more than .004 of an inch on either side of the cover. Once it is correct, tighten the bolts.
I will be eliminating the pieces to help prevent the bolts from backing out and I will Loctite them for good measure.
    Thanks Again!
