I looked at a gen 5 gasket laying on top of a garlock trimmed for an IC install. Wht I don't get, and something Dave (Trannyman) mentioned, is how much farther forward the gen 5 outlet is compared to a gen 3. When installing a Gen 5 gasket on a gen 3 IC install, what do you do about the large area where there is no gasket material? I'm sure it will seal, but it can't be good to allow pressure to continually blow through the gap where there is no gasket.

Are you talking about the snout side? I've done it on 2 cars...no problems at all. It seals just fine.

Yep the snout side. The Gen 5 gasket outlet cutout extends a good 2" beyond the outlet of the Gen 3 LIM, IC opening, and blower outlet. Do you not fill anything in there? Also do you use Gen 5 gaskets on the top and bottom?

This appears to be more MacGyverizing than I would usually resort to so getting the procedure right, will determine whether I feel it's worth it or not.

I didn't use any sealer for it, just tightened it down. I have one on my Gen3 LIM that I cut to accommodate the GenV.

Edit: Keep in mind I'm still not intercooled...and I don't know the tolerances of the IC machining.
If the pro's who have done them suggest sealer, then it may not be a bad idea.

Sealer no matter what gasket on an IC install. But what I was more worried about was the large area on the snout end where there would be no gasket between the mating surfaces. Maybe a picture of the Garlock trimmed one laying on top of the Gen5 would be helpful. I'm probably not explaining my concern well enough. I'll try to get a picture tonight.

I think I know what you're talking about here....like where you can see my LIM on the left before I cut it out.

    And then After:

And FWIW, I did trim the other side to match my opening for that as well.

Yep this is what I'm talking about. I have the ZZP Machined LIM. Judging from the "trimmed" Garlocks they sent, that area before you cut you LIM is what I assumed would be there, but not covered by the gasket. I need to look things over again tonight.

Also do you use a Gen 5 on the top too? or go with a Gen 3 between the core and blower?

Assuming it works for the bottom, trimming it would work for the top as well.

You Cut your LIM farther back than what ZZP does, and there in lies my concern. Si it ok to not have gasket material in the sandwich.

If you're going to worry about that part, then worry about the sides too.....that's why I suggest the L32 gasket because I have blown out a L67 gasket before on a previous stock LIM.

Since you've done this before, the others must mave looked like the top picture, yes?. You just left it without gasket material or did you fill it in with gasket cut from the right side? You know me, I want to know the absolute most technically sound way to do this.

On the Gen3 setups, I leave the snout side of the LIM alone, but open up the TB side for an IC. Then trim the gasket on the TB side to match...there's not much you can do for the snout side. Don't over torque them by any means, but a snug fit and sealer I think should do it nicely.

On my car, as you see the gasket fit, it see's 14 psi and no problems at all. With the L67 gasket, it didn't last very long. Be it something that I did/didn't do or whatever...but I like the L32 gasket much better....much more stout. Maybe it's just my own reasoning.

I had no problems when I was IC'd running a 3.0 pulley last time, and I had one GM and one garlock iirc I understand why you Ron Vogel and PRJ like the L32 gaskets. I'm going to give it a go and try not to think about the missing piece. I'm pretty sure once it has a few miles with no issues, I'll forget about it and be able to sleep at night again.
