Do you by any chance have a stethoscope and a helper to crank it while you listen for specifics on where its coming from???
|
Yes, and yes.
Both of which I've done, and it's just as loud on the blower case, as it is on the alternator, and the LIM, etc.
Also took off both belts, alternator spins freely, makes a little bit of noise though.
Started up without either belt on, same noise...
Remove the valve covers...sounds like you either lost a lifter or a rocker popped off...which would cause the misfire and back firing...
Well, that doesnt sound fun...hate taking the rear cover off...
For the lifter, what am I looking for specifically? The rocker is pretty obvious though...
What about a broken valve spring? My dads hung up on the idea of a broken spring...
Any ideas about an injector related issue? Anything I could try before i start taking more **** apart?
Nope...not an injector thing...that pinging is valvetrain for sure...but it doesn't sound bottom end related.
You're right, it doesnt sound like the bottom end, it seems to resonate through the top end.
Might just have to cam the thing while it's torn down, gives a good excuse to spend some money.
Thanks blue, if you have any other ideas, lemme know, I'll post as I find **** out.
Meh...at a worst case scenario...1.95's, 105 springs, P&P'd heads...will make that thing one NASTY rocker car...just sayin'
then you can leave the motor in the car
ROFL, it'd be nice..severe lack of people in my area that can do head work though...
Only time will tell though.
What am I looking for if the lifter is bad exactly?
Got the valve covers off, rockers are all seated fine, no play at all, springs all look fine, no metallic flakes or anything on the top of the heads.
Cracked the throttle body off, and in the coolant passage on the bottom, there was a decent amount of pure white, foam, that was partially gritty.
Confused the **** out of me seeing something so pure white in the coolant system. Any idea what the heck that could be?
Gonna pop the LIM/SC off and see how the lifters look in a bit.
That doesn't sound too whoopy. Sounds like coolant might have made a mess of things somehow...
Yeah...inside the LIM smells like gasoline super strong, pulled 2 bolts on the rear head (LIM bolts that go in near the middle cylinder on the back bank) and oil came out...quite a bit too.
Even though the LIM gasket is less than 2 years old, looks like its failed somehow. Taking a break atm, knees hurt like hell. I'll have the LIM off ina few to be able to tell for certain.
LIM is off. On the top of the LIM, there was a puddle of oil on the gasket (LIM to SC gasket)
LIM Gasket though looks fine, though the coolant passages are ****ing gunked up. Looking down in the heads, I can see chunks of black/white **** in the coolant passages.
One thought is....I've been loosing oil, very, very slowly over the past few months, and havent thought anything about it. It's never burned oil, or leaked either.
Pushed the car back today, and there was a little spot of oil under the engine, looks like it came from the drivers side of the engine.
Reading manuals and online, a bad headgasket would let oil seep into the coolant, causing the white "foam"....
Any thoughts?
3800's sound like a duck.
But seriously...I'd do them while your there...get the LIM totally blasted and cleaned out. Probably gonna need a new PCV while your in there too...flush that coolant out as well. Sucks man...hopefully it fixes it.
Yeah...Probably gonna be digging deep into my pockets looking for some spare change that hasnt been there for awhile...
So the list atm...
NEEDS:
Head gaskets
LIM gasket
S/C gasket
TB gasket
Oil and filter
PCV
LIM, either blasted, or new.
Possibly:
Cam w/ supporting ****.
new lifters
random other crap...
Lists sound bout complete, throw out anything else that should be done at this time.
Thanks guys
Get lifters from Texas Speed...cheap for 16 lifters...like 120 bucks for the LS7. Then you have 4 left over incase you might eventually get a bad one.
Will do...
I'll get coolant elbows too...even though I magically got the alt bracket out without breaking either of them..
Installing the new lifters, just let them soak in oil for a night, and slide them in correct? They dont need to be turned while being put it, correct?
