I got the SES light today and took it to autozone to see what the code was. It's the P0102 (MAF low input or something like that). This is my second time having this code and was wondering about my options. Obviously I could go out and buy a new MAF sensor right away, but what about checking for leaks and cleaning the sensor? Should I try these before buying a new sensor? I've also heard that the MAF sensors were poorly made in the first place, is it worth $130 for a new one? How do I check for leaks and/or clean the sensor?

BTW my car is a 97 GTP.

First thing I would try to do is clean the MAF. They can get dirty, especially if you have an oiled air filter. So clean it first to see if that solves the problem.

If not, I would buy a good used GM one from Ed Morad. I would imagine it would be less than $50 for a good used MAF sensor.

A few years ago I had a similar issue. It was a result of a majorly bad rescue fuel issue...long story. At any rate I got a remanufactured MAF sensor from Napa. A few days later, same thing. Exchanged it, few days later, same thing. Exchanged it, few days later, not only is it bad again, but the car was bucking and then died completely. Tow it to a dealership since I had tried many things (I had several OBD 2 codes through the process...like I said, long story). Dealership said it started up fine, but MAF is bad. Great. So in the end I take the 3rd one back to Napa, pay the extra $30 or whatever and get a brand new one. The problem was solved after that.

    Good luck,
    Marianne
