Having problems with a 2000 GTP. After sitting for 3 hours started back up and instantly died. Restarted with black smoke out the exhaust and idle fluctuating from 500-1500 then dies. Could keep running by reving engine but when tried to drive engine died when let off accelerator. No check engine light. Happened at lake so I have to trailer it to shop. would like to see if anyone has any ideas.

    Thanks

well black smoke means lots of fuel is being burned, idle fluctuating and missing sounds like a vacuum leak, and the car is dumping fuel. any broken vac lines?

also found this info on MAF sensor, will try this first before repalcing.

one site said; to see if the MAF is the problem, disconnect, if engine runs better then MAF sensor is problem.

I'd think potential MAF as well. Quick easy test. Unplug it and start the car. Expect some idling issues for a few minutes. After that, if the car runs decent the problem was usually the maf.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

Happy Ending? replaced the MAF sensor, fairly easy just have to have the torx bit with the "safty pin hole".

Attempted to clean but in this case did not help.

Trouble shooting was disconnecting which made the engine run better.

    Auto Zone $133-$136
    Oreily $139-$180 lftm.

I ran my car without my maf plugged in for almost a month while trying to find a cheap replacement. You just have to keep it reved up a bit at first starting so it won't die. PM KFISH he has a yard and quoted me around 50 bux last time I inquired about a MAF.

    Good Luck.

the PCM has another mode that will take over when the MAF is unplugged so you can safely drive the car, it just doesnt run as well as with a good one
