I know most people will just go for the FWI's, but has anyone here modded a stock air box for air flow, etc? If so will you please explain what you've done, post pics, and describe any differences you have observed?
Thanks!

the most restrictive part is the rubber tubing, a K&N drop in filter and a piece of solid intake tubing/PVC pipe with a 4 inch diameter would be easy and effective
Most people in here will swear by the cheap open cone... I have one and it does its job
yes, causes turbulence.
Open Cone wins
depends on your mods and tune.
You are talking about gutting the airbox? I've heard of this being done before. However i would recommend the DIY PVC pipe with a cone. Nothing outperforms a cone with the headlight removed.
Best, Lenny
And better throttle response...and the gutted airbox is an old school thing. You take a saw or dremel and just hack the front of the box out behind the headlight so the entire filter is exposed. And yes...an open cone trumps a PVC pipe intake through the headlight. I'd bet money on it.
I did a gutted air box before i ever found out about this place, throttle response was nice. Also noticed it was a bit louder.
Also found that behind those two honey comb grill pieces the plastic doesnt exactly flow well....
The only thing about open cone that I don't like is the sacrificed quality of filtering. That mixed with air filter oil fouling up your MAF. I had a FWI and then put the stock air box back in after paying $250 for a freaking MAF that went bad. My other GP buddy who has a FWI replaced FOUR MAF's last year because of his. Yes, FOUR! When I worked at Checker I saw that happening all the time to people because of cone filters. I'm sure the power/performance gains are there, but I just wish there was a happy medium. Or just a high quality cone filter that filtered at least CLOSE to what a normal paper filter will do.
right, its the filters fault you picked a ****ty filter or over oiled your filter.
If only someone sold good quality dry flow cone filters.
I drilled holes in my girlfriends air box on her GA GT. it helped a lot with throttle response and sounds pretty beast. AND you would never know by looking at it.
i originally cut off the entire air box sourrounding the air filter and left just the filter and clips on it. no i went the pvc route and open cone. definetly better sound and seems a little better flow. also looks a hell of a lot better.
Buy one from K&N they stand out.
