New here, but have been reading quite a bit. I'm getting ready to replace my timing set/damper/gaskets, coolant elbows, tensioner, belts, coolant level sensor (mine's bad), water pump/gasket, transmission filter/gasket, ac compressor, ac accumulator, orifice, PCV, SC coupler (green-I've got the rattling rocks at idle), windshield washer pump, and possibly the LIM and SC gasket (if they're leaking). Throw in some seafoam, an oil change, new copper plugs, and hopefully that'll have her.

First of all, I've tried three different timing sets. All of the timing chains had corrosion on them. Two were SA Gear brand from Advance Auto Parts and the third was a Cloyes I bought off of Amazon. One of the Adavance Auto sets was padded with a page from a 2004 newspaper and the Cloyes off Amazon was produced in 2/2008. Is corrosion acceptable on timing chains? I would suspect not, especially when these sets are $80-100. I don't really need a performance chain, just a good quality (i.e. not rusted) timing set. Recommendations? Rock auto has a timing set with damper for $65.82 shipped. I'm a bit wary given my experiences thus far (I'd hate to pay for return shipping). I thought I read somewhere that the solid cam gear was not recommended? Cloyes was solid, SA Gear was not.

Secondly, is there anything else I should be considering before tearing down the GTP only to realize I should have also replaced (insert part here)?

Sorry for the long post. Thanks for the help.

Most of the OEM parts are typically better than aftermarket when tearing into these engines. The stock LIM gasket is crap, get a aluminum one, most likely need a s/c gasket as well if your tearing into the lim. The coolant elbows always break off when disassembling so get new ones as well.

if your elbows are old then they will crack, if not and you're careful they'll be okay.

But apparently the O-rings on the after market ones crush a LOT easier than the GM ones and need to be replaced almost every time.

Also, besides a GM dealer.... who sells just the GM timing chain? I'd venture to say no one?

zzp sells a "stock" style timing chain. When I ordered one years ago when I did my cam in my Impala it just came in a ziplock bag

I did order an aluminum LIM from the dealer, but I believe they wanted $75 for just the chain. I may just order 3 timing sets and hope that one out of a total of 6 will not have sat unprotected on a shelf for 10 years.

I know I have horrible luck, but geesh
