I managed to combine "open cone" & "Boxed CAI" with a homemade air box made out of a rubbermaid plastic storage container. Works greatand cost about $60 to build.

I think that intake is worst than stock. Filter is too small...too many bends and the pipe is TINY. Plus...that box isn't sealing really anything.
okesongtp get the k&n intake if you want that type of setup. then it might actually be halfway beneficial instead of more restrictive than stock like you have now. $hit hondas run bigger filters than that.
Ya, umm...got your post the first time. And...for future reference...if it isn't in a sealed box like a Wizaired or a Thrasher...then it isn't blocking out sh1t...thats been proven.
I love this topic soooo much. Makes me happy to know I can make the same power while saving money! I put a K&N on my car off the throttle body with a small turn to avoid parts of the car (Filter is too big) and since then the car tells me its getting 2 more mpg. Good stuff. This was before any other (two) mods, and from what I read, I should not have it with no exhaust mods. Oh well, too late.
Anyways~
It is amazing how much ambient temperatures (under-hood temperatures?) affected the performance. I took it to the strip twice. I ran four times before bracket racing started and did a 15.0 on my fastest (third) run. It took about an hour for them to dial in everyones bracket and in that time it got way cold outside. So finally it was my turn and on that last run my car did a 14.6! Holy crap! The next time I went it ran consistent 14.7s all day.
I have yet to go to the strip now that I have my front plog and 2.5 DP (shoulda gone 3, oh well I'm dumb) + Magnaflow Cat + U-Bend. I would have done more (better) but I hear you can only go so far before the tranny says "I hate you" and dies. It is my only car, after all.
Anyone know of a filter (size) I can get that will fit right on the TB?
A 3" Downpipe isn't going to kill your transmission...you could even cam your car and get headers and as long as it was taken care of...you dont have to worry until get into the sub 3.2" pulley range.
Did anyone notice the AFR's?
Leaning it out would give you more power...
thankyou for the results! I had a gutted air box and then put on a JMB fenderwell intake i had the same consistant track times with both of them. I would like to see dyno results with the fenderwell
The AFR is leaner with the better flowing intake.
If you maintained the same AFR, the results might not have been as "showing".
If you tuned for the same expected AFR, the results might not have been as noticeable.
Its clear the TB filter flows the best because it leaned it out though.
your AFR was mid 10's with the full intake (too rich) and then low 11's with the TB filter (correct area for those mods).
I'm just saying that probably made a difference as well.
Leaner = more power.
Hm.
So, what you're saying is that it should be tuned both for and without the cold air box at perfect AFRs and tested under both situations to see what power each makes?
Right.
Also...lean is mean...you'll make more power running lean...but as you already know, it isn't as safe.
Yup.
Dont think they would test much different.
Unless you were more heavily modded. Shows it flows much better though. Leaned the car out quite a bit.
Any updates?
