has anyone had a custom cam grind? i know of a place that should be able to grind a used 3.8 cam for a reasonable price. if so what are the specs recommended for a SC 3.8 would i be able to copy xp cam specs?

if youre going to be buying a cam like another one, why not just buy that one and save yourself the time and money? getting a custom cam ground is usually for people who want to run something unique NOT on stock heads.

i have a good stock cam out of a blown block, thats why i figured the 100 dollar's for a grind would be decent, now to make a few calls and see if the machinist has confidence in doing a 3.8 cam normaly he does SB cams

youre wanting a regrind cam? can you do that? you cant add lift to a cam that doesnt have it in the first place.

    lift you mean??

yea, the xp has LARGER lifts, it would be hard to add that to the stock cam. so all you can do is make a smaller cam than the stock cam.

Pretty sure you can buy a blank grind from Comp too if you want to go that route...but yeah you can't ADD on lift.

Sure you can, you just use a smaller base circle. I would want adjustable rockers or custom pushrods to do it, because I doubt the lifters are going to have that much adjustment, so it's probably not cost effective.

That's assuming you won't grind through the hardened portion of the metal. I have no idea how much room you have on a stock 3800 cam.

im sorry bud, but you dont seem to know much about these motors and taking it to a sbc guy wont help much for cam work, leave it to the experts the SPECIALIZE in 3800's like zzp, intense etc. they have gone through R&D to take out all the guess work that you would be creating

skidoo, i comprehend enough, and to think you cant add lift is a false statement, SBC guy just means he specializes in the such, does not mean the same technique for machining does not apply. If i can get 100 dollar cam and help get rid of "junk" i wont use in my garage then i will make the attempt.

go for it. see what you can do and come back with your results. it would be interesting to see how much you can change the stock cam until you get to the point where its junk.

as soon as i can get around to it i will grab some measurements and determine if enough material is around to have it ground and change the shape of the lobes, from some of the pictures i have seen tho the base does appear to be quite thin. win or lose im also going to attempt to research if doing my own "modded stock" rockers would be a worthwhile investment. If i can save a few bucks and/or make a quality writeup for the community i think it will be a reasonable use of time.

What's your plan for preload adjustment? You're talking about taking .077 off of the base circle, which is pretty severe.

    Sounds like an interesting project.
