So I e-mailed K&N to ask about their intake for my 2004 Grand Prix GTP Competition Group. I'm just gonna copy the e-mails sent and you guys tell me what you think.
I'm wondering if K&N has any dyno results for the 2004/2005 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP or the upgraded "Competition Group". Both have a 3.8L V6 with a supercharger, but I believe the Competition Group is tuned differently. I've seen the results for the normally aspirated engine, but I'm wondering if you have any results for the supercharged engine.

Thanks for contacting K&N. The K&N air intake system for the 04 Grand Prix GTP SC is part number 57-3049. The dyno testing was performed on a 2004 Grand Prix GTP with 3.8L Supercharged engine. The kit increased the horsepower by 16.78 to the wheels. Please take a look at the product information on our website for the air intake system. Here is the link, http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=57-3049.

From what I know about the Grand Prix, the dyno testing couldn't have been done on a supercharged 3.8L. The 3.8L V6 with a supercharger puts out around 260HP. Your test shows original HP at 197.77 which would closely match the 200HP rated out of the non-supercharged 3.8L.. What I'm saying is I believe your dyno testing was on a 2004 Grand Prix either Standard Sedan or GT, which both put out a rated 200HP, where as the GTP or GTP Competition Group both put out a rated 260HP.

After checking with our engineering dept, the dyno testing was in fact performed on the supercharged model. The engine output is measured at the wheels so it could be 20-25% less than the crank horsepower due to driveline loss.
So those are the e-mails I sent in Red and the responses from K&N in blue. I don't see how they can say the difference between rated HP and actual HP was 62.23 HP. I mean, yeah, there is gonna be a HP difference, but that means they are saying that my car that has a rated 260 HP really only has 197.77 HP, and then with the K&N Air Intake only 214.55 HP. So would that mean that the 200 HP engine really only has around 140 HP at the wheels? I find that hard to believe.![]()
