Needs a new coupler most likely
Okay, a98gtp4u....you are my only hope right now. I am lost....If i ask you some questions, dont laugh because i am new to grand prix's
1st. what engine does the 04 gtp have ....the l32 or l67?
2nd. By coupler is that some cheap easy part to fix? They just said they didnt keep up with the supercharger oil and now it knocks when the belts attached. Im hoping to drive the car home but it is about 6 hours away.
If it is the coupler is it easy to replace on spot, or (idk if this is a dumb question) but could i just remove the supercharger belt and drive ti without teh supercharger...or does that belt drive anything other that the supercharger itself.
If you can answer these I will be ecstatic. I cannot find these answers anywhere.
is it worth $3300.... Or do you htink they ragged it for having a possibly bad s/c at 117k
1st. L32
2nd. yes, 25 minutes... YouTube - Replacing a worn out supercharger coupler on 3.8 GM engines
Link for coupler... https://www.zzperformance.com/grand_...=155&catid=106
For 3300 sounds like a steal... as long as that is the only issue it has.
I would get it for 3300, just make sure that is the only problem. U can drive it without the belt, its just gonna be slow as hell. Also if they never maintained the s/c, it mite need to be rebuilt, i got my s/c snout rebuilt for 150 from a guy off ebay that does it for a living. He did a gr8 job, put a smaller pulley on it and everything, of course the pulley was extra.
Wow, this forum is so great! So i could buy that coupler and install it....but if that doesnt resolve the problem. I for sure could take the supercharger pulley off and drive it home (about 6 hours away) and not damage anything right...And when you mean slow as hell do you mean just normal 3800 series speed or like seriously (metro) slow?
I just talked to the guy....and i watched the youtube video attached above. and the vid shows that play is a sign of a bad coupler
And the guy im buying from said he felt the pulley and there is "lots of play" does that show a bad coupler...like the guy in the video said?
You should jus need a 10mm socket to take the bolts off... It should only take about 30 minutes to replace the coupler... But, if you want to wait until you make the drive home thats understandable. By slow he means "GT" slow... you'll just be driving a naturally aspirated v6 theres nothing to worry about.
mickey t......you guys are sure the engine will be fine without the supercharger for that drive right? i just dont want to buy it and break it on the way home.... Someone on (i know its stupid of me) yahoo answers said it could mess up the computer because its programmed to work with the s/c. Untrue? I will be driving from st.louis missori to midland mi. so a good drive....
The s/c belt doesnt drive any other critical things?? w/p alt etc.
Sounds like the coupler is gone if theres alot of play, mine had play out the @$$. Make sure thats all thats wrong with and snatch the keys out his hand. If anything rebuilding the snout is no issue, its fairly cheap.
The guy just compares it to a golfball bouncing around inside the supercharger but it is not locked up or anything. So im thinking i will just take the belt off and fix whatever when i get home. you guys are sure the engine will be fine without the supercharger for that drive right? i just dont want to buy it and break it on the way home....its like 6 hours away.
The computer wont be muffed up without a s/c
Some people take the belt off the SC and drive it like that on long trips. I had to take mine off on my 99 and drove it with the belt for 3 days! Im pretty sure you will be fine.
Yeah, hell. Buy the car, pull the belt, get it home. It's NOT going to hurt anything, but Check Engine might <Should> pop on. If anything, you can get a Junkyard SC for it, and resell the car for a profit.
You might see if you can pull the belt and test drive it be fore buying, paying attention to the Transmission. If they never changed the SC oil, I doubt they did much for trans fluid and filter maintenance.. and 120-130k miles is where these trannys will die with no service. Look for slippage in first gear at half throttle, and make sure it is actually has 4th gear. If so, you can get a trans from Tripleedge for 1500-1600...
Just don't beat on it with the S/C belt off...probably not the best of ideas...
Does it look all liget? Im going down this weekend for it because you say its okay to drive without supercharger.

One thing I would be worried about is the fact he/she has exhaust tips on it or exhaust system and couldn't tell you what was for sure wrong with the supercharger...could be someone who don't know much about cars. I know just because you have a exhaust system it dont mean you have to know about cars..but IMO you should know some! I would be worried that they beat the every living crap out of the car...you need to ask them when is the last time they changed there SC oil. If they dont know what your talking about I would be worried that the car was beat in the ground! Still I think you can replace a whole GenV for around 600 bucks but still that would concern me!
You will be fine running without a belt. If you do get the car the first thing I would is change the SC oil its VERY easy! And replace the coupler and then put a belt back on and see how it sounds/run. Again you can get a GenV M90 for around 600 so thats not bad. I would think 3300 for a 04 is pretty good even with those miles. And you are getting it for such a good deal you can always replace the whole SC and still be under KBB.
buy it...it is a steal. you should not have to change the entire SC for the symptoms that you described. It is probably the coupler, as the factory ones go out on these fairly often when the mileage gets up there. If the car is in average or better condition on the outside, and runs/drives OK other than the Supercharger then buy it. Make sure there is no slipping between gears with the tranny. No weird noises, etc. Just look for anything out of the ordinary. but for that price, you could fix a lot and be in good shape price value wise.
