Do i need it or can i use something like the black gasket maker sealant stuff
I really want to do this tooday but no one has the gaskets in stock just the gromets for them
Any help would be great
Plus it would be nice to save like 40 bucks so i can do my brakes too

to be honest i dont know if you can... i never heard of it. but i know its definitely something i would not skip out on. but thats just me. im always one who tries to do it right the first time so i dont have to do it again later

Yea Im not really triing to skip over anything I just was curious i mean the valve covers arent under any real preasure and Ive used the gasket maker for things like waterpumps and such so i dont know why it wouldnt work
My main problem is noone has them in stock and I actually have the time to do it today....

i put new gaskets on and it still leaked. DO NOT use the permatex gasket maker, "The Right Stuff", you will never be able to get your valve covers off again. period. instead, use your old gaskets and run a bead of sealer around them on the bottom and let dry. they wont leak then.

I picked up new gaskets found them at kregan/orielys
now ill be spending the next few hours drinking cussin and hopefully fixing the oil leak problem

HAvent got to them yet ended up workin on my boys mazda6 we replaced a door bumper and fender and that took us about 4 hours lots of drinking very little cussin and it looks half decent
Tomorow we tackle the valve cover gaskets and front brake pads

I would be concerned with the possibility of excess RTV/gasket maker squeezing out and dripping into the top of the head, maybe blocking a return passage or getting into a valvespring.
I guess if you used real gaskets AND a thin bead of rtv around the outside of the gasket only?

I got GM specific new ones and never have had an issue...on and off at LEAST 3 or 4 times and still seal perfectly. No RTV here.

DId the front brake pads and the front valve covar today ran short on time had to get kids from school
the back looks like fun for sure but it will wait till friday i think

depending on year of car...there was a recall on one of the valve cover gaskets..i took mine to the dealership and got it done for free.

Yea being in an auto tech program and taking a car to a stealership would have look bad and brused my ego a little lol

Yea I pretty much hate every thing about stealerships. I have honestly never had a good exp with them. Thats 90% of the reason i got into mechanics. There cheap bastards I understand they want to make money and all that but damn
