Just swapped a new battery in for my late father-in-laws 2005 Grand Prix GT with about 150k miles. It started right up no problems and electricals look great. However, after about 2 mins of running grey/black smoke is coming off the engine basically right at the top of the exhaust manifold front side of motor/below the heads. Also, white smoke out of exhaust tips.

I know nothing about these motors does anyone have any idea what that means? I have a check engine light but no way of checking what is causing via OBD

Sounds like you have a leaking valve cover and it's burning oil off.

As far as the white exhaust, it's winter. Likely just condensation unless its smells like coolant and you notice the system low all the time.

Take it to any parts store and have the code(s) read. It's trying to tell you something

how long did the car sit? i also say valve cover leak. get a mirror and flashlight to peek under/behind manifold
if the car sat for a while, theres prolly condensation in the exhaust system that has to burn off. after that youll see white exhaust this time of year. nice warm exhaust hitting cold air.
check engine is scanned easily at parts store.

Totally agree, oil off the valve covers, and condensation in the exhaust. Very common here in the People's Democratic Republic of Upper Canuckistan.
