I took my car to a summit point raceway while running stock weight oil and my car developed a pretty loud valve tapping. Ended up putting heavier weight oil in and running 10+ laps with no power issue but I'm wondering if it's potential spring fatigue making my valves make a tapping noise.

    I would guess it's a lifter.

I would say we need more info on what year, any mods to it, mileage, etc. Taking a car to a track and beating on it and then getting a loud tapping noise is usually not good.

It's a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix with the L67 motor, I have a 3.4 inch pully, headers, straight pipe, colder plugs and that's really it. Coolent temps got up to 210 before I'd go easy on it. I have a video of the tapping should I post it on YouTube and post the link here ?

You probably spun a rod bearing.

Update: I've replaced the rockers, push rods, springs, retainers, valve covers and the gasket for it, but the sound is the same so I'm probably looking at a spun baring but it just doesn't sound loud enough

GTPpower mentioned a lifter at the very beginning.

Did you check those while you had it blown apart?

You probably didn't take the blower and lim off but, may have to now.

I would agree with you that there is a difference between a tapping and a knocking.

Did you put stiffer springs in while you were in there?
