    So I bought an 01 gtp and the lady I bought it from has been putting regular fuel for the 5 years she has owned it.

    Is this affecting the performance of the car? It also gets a pretty low mpg (18-19)

    I was thinking about switching to mid-mid-grade fuel but I don't know if it would hurt something that I don't know about.

    the owners manual specifically states to only use premium fuel

    if you can get 93 run that.

    She didn't really hurt a thing if you never drove it hard but it's still not the correct fuel grade to be using.

    Like stated, you want to run atleast 91+ octane all the time in these motors.

    do not run 87.......91-93 only. 93 is proffered.

    run the tank low, then fill up with better gas.

    You can re-fuel when ever, I'd just watch your right foot if you wait.

    Regular unleaded isn't a high enough octane for the supercharged 3800, they need the higher octane to reduce spark knock because of the forced induction motor. Higher cylinder pressures with the supercharger need a fuel that's more resistance to knock.

    It's better to be safe than sorry, the previous owner may have used the cheap stuff and got lucky but you could be the unlucky one if you try to floor it on a freeway on-ramp with regular fuel. It could damaged the engine.

    If you can't afford 93 get another car. It's as simple as that. It's not as expensive as you think anyway.

    Let's do some math. I don't know exactly what your prices are there but lets work the the prices of the station a mile or so from me. 87 is 2.04, 93 is 2.41. If you run the tank completely empty you'd put 17 gallons in. 17 gallons of 87 is 34.68. 17 gallons of 93 is 40.97. That is a difference of 6.29 over a full tank.
