The socket should go in if you start on the drivers side and slide it in there. Use an extension with the swivel tip and you will have the clearance you need. The bigger problem is removing the actual knock sensor. It won't fit through the opening so take it up over the top of the transmission and fish it out with a magnetic telescoping whatchamacallit through the passengers side wheel well. Your going to need to remove the wheel.
Jeff
Thank you! So then I assume the new sensor will have the same trouble getting back into position and have to go up over the trans ...I, Yi, Yi!!!
Yup, pretty much it took me a night of cursing to get the thing out and I ended up leaving the car up and went to bed. The next morning I was able to see that it would slide up and over the trans, but I had to remove the wheel to get to it.
Another problem you are going to run into is once you have the sensor back in your socket and are trying to feed it into the hole again as it is slightly cocked compared to how it goes in. I used a small rod that was in one of my gun cleaning kits to put the sensor in and place the contact pin inside the end of this small tube then I was able to get the first thread started, once there you can switch back to your socket and extension. The torque spec is critical for proper operation so don't exceed the spec or it makes the sensor overly sensitive. I believe it was either 11 or 14 ft/lbs, but look it up to be sure.
Also when you remove the sensor make sure your wearing your rain gear as you are going to get wet.
Jeff
Do you mean broke off inside the block or no longer works as it is supposed to? The first I don't know, but the knock sensor causing driveability issues, one of mine was giving me issues as it would show knock just off idle and pull timing and just lose all power it had. Changed both of them since I was unable to tell which one was the issue. After that no issue with the knock sensor.
Jeff
HighOctanes never seen it yet.
In theory ... and this depends on arm length you can potentially start threading it in from the passenger wheel well. It's not far behind the bracket that holds the diff to engine
After pulling the pic from photobucket, I'm thinking..I'd pull the bracket and use my hand to thread that baby in to start. Might be easier than starting it from below. However.. J57 would know better than I. I've never tried putting on in from below. Only when engines were out.
I was telling you that I have never seen one broken off yet. It would be very difficult to do based on how they are made.
Boy that jogs a memory. Unfortunately the bracket can't be removed while in the car as it runs into the subframe. Those bolts are TIGHT also I don't know what the torque spec is for them but they are about 4 foot long and I am guessing about 967 Ft/Lbs. I fought with the bracket for a long time and didn't see the last bolt (there are 4) that was my last straw. Then I went to bed. The next day I found the other bolt (someone had mentioned it in the thread where I was asking about the knock sensor), I got the other bolt out but still wasn't able to get it out. When I sat up to see if the bracket would come out from the top I could see the knock sensor mocking me, and that's the rest of the story. I am not sure if I could get my hand in there as I had never seen a clear picture like the one that Bill posted, I guess you might be able to get an arm in there but it's going to be tight.
Jeff
Uh..which bolts/bracket you talking about Jeff? The ones I'm suggesting? Because they are possible.
That bracket that holds the trans and engine together. I was not able to remove it. I was able to drop it down about an inch, but I couldn't get it out in the car, although I didn't really try that hard once I could see the knock sensor sitting on top of the trans....mocking me.
Also the bolts are really tight and the and about 2" long.
keep in mind I have an 05' so I have no clue how previous years are as far as clearance between the subframe and the engine/trans area.
Jeff
Jeff you are right, I dislike that bracket as well.
However this is an 02 and he will have the bracket that I'm showing.
