After I shifted it out of first and slowed down to stop I shifted back to first check engine light came on. Nothing seems wrong with the engine though

That is pretty interesting. You are manually shifting, which should not cause any codes or check engine lights. Please have the code read, let us know the code, name for the code, year and model of the car.
Why are you shifting manually?
Well get a new 15A fuse. Fusebox is in the glove box behind the pull out compartment.
It's on the right side inside the glove box. It should say something about a fusebox on the top of it, and you pull where it says it. Are the 97's the same as the 02's? I would think so.
Check and see what other fuse use a 15a and just swap it real quick to get the code. Maybe a horn fuse or a headlight fuse or somthing.
A 10 will work perfectly fine for using a scan tool, just don't use the cigarette lighter with the 10A in place, or it may blow it.
So either way..we are waiting. Ask him for a 15A fuse too. BTW, if the fuse blows again..take the penny outta your cig lighter.
