Thread: Engine Compartment Recall?

I just got a letter from gm saying theres a recall for my car which is a 97 grand prix gt saying that my engine compartment could catch on fire, i read some stories of other people having this issue and it seems like it also happened to people after they had the recall service done. Im lost as to if I should have the service done or not, and now im pretty worried about my car catching fire while parked, any opinions?

They take off the front plug wire "loom" that runs along the front of the valve cover as well and replace it with a couple of regular plug wire retainers.

No, IIRC they're only going to do the front valve cover, which will just make the rear one leak. From what I've heard anyway.

so should i pay a shop to do both? i cant do this stuff myself so im clueless lol

Well, last night when I checked my fuel rail pressure relief valve, I very slightly depressed it with my finger. Just barely. No fuel came out. Today, my car was taking an extra second to crank. I popped the hood to find that the pressure relief valve was leaking out after shutting the car off. I went up to autozone right away and used a Schrader valve tool and tightened the valve up, it was pretty loose. Seems to have worked for now, I'll definitely keep my eye on it though, and I've got a fire extinguisher in the car. (Sorry for paragraph, enter key won't work on this site for some reason)

I've been getting the notice regularly. When I checked on the recall all they said they would do is remove the front loom and replace with 2 wire separators They wouldn't change the valve cover gasket as part of the recall. It would still leak but wouldn't accumulate oil on the loom and catch fire. A waste of time. I changed my valve cover gaskets when I changed LIM gaskets and the new UIM! I also removed the loom and made separators from zip ties. No more oil leak so a lot less chance of the fire. I don't like how GM is handling this at all.

It is a cost thing. they have a new recall for traverse's that states "low coolant can cause premature water pump seal failure" so all the recall has the dealer do is top off your coolant. NOT check for a leak or fix anything, just make sure the overflow is full and if it is low, top it off and check the rad. level.

As far as the engine compartment fire recall on our cars, IIRC, the supercharged cars get new valve cover gasket, and the NA engines just get the loom removal and separator installation.I Am a dealer service tech, and I have done a lot of those recalls over the past few years, and I can honestly say I have never really encountered a vc leak or anything even remotely bad enough to cause a fire. Plenty of other oil leaks on the 3.8 but the covers have been pretty good!

You right on Bill, they need to do the recall to change the poor valve cover gaskets used not just the parts that may or may not collect oil.
