I got the 98 in the garage and started tearing into her this evening.

Here's what the UIM looks like:

Heavily gunked up on the inside but it's slated for replacement so at least don't have to clean it...

    Here's the LIM:

Epic fail on the gaskets, almost every edge is compromised:

I heard some sloshing while I was carrying the LIM over to the workbench and before I could put it down and get a rag I got this:

About 1/2 cup of antifreeze all over the floor...at least I know I'm doing the right job!!

Here's a question though: I got the Dorman aluminum elbow kit, but I only see this one elbow, where's the other one?

98 only has one coolant elbow, the other one is built into the manifold you'll see what I mean

Built into the alt bracket not the manifold.

Technically yes. However you could replace the o-ring from the other elbow onto your metal elbow that is part of the tensioner. Be careful pulling the tensioner off. Wiggle front to back (of the car) many times until it falls into your hand. If you put pressure on it the wrong way, you break the timing cover. Which...is why GM went to a two plastic elbow setup.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

Got it and thanks. One of the 10MM bolts holding the water pump sheared off so that's going to be a drill/tap. Here's a question: one of the bolts holding in the water pump is behind the power steering pump pulley. I'm already halfway to China in disassembly here, surely the PS pump doesn't come off to replace the water pump? so, I only see one bolt holding it?

OK, got the info on the water pump, I guess the PS pump is coming off...

PROBLEM: One of the 10mm bolts at the top of the pump broke right off. I don't know if I can grip whats left or if I have to drill/tap, and advice?

the head snapped off? or it broke inside the threaded hole?

if just the head snapped off, take the rest of the pump off, use a plumbers solder torch to heat up the cover where the bolt is broken into. use vise grips, or cut a slot in the end and use a screw driver to remove it.

heat will make the threaded area get larger, and help the bolt the come out easier.

if it snapped off inside the hole your kinda f'ed, drilling a bolt out on the car like that is hard to do, you may need a new timing cover.

I think the head snapped off, but I won't be able to tell until I get the pump off. Will keep you posted. Looks like I can get a right angle drill in there and use an e-z-out if necessary, hopefully there is some sticking out that I can work with.

GOOD NEWS, it was just the head that popped off, a little PB blaster and a small amount of heat and it came right out with the vice grips. Better news, it's 1/4-20, not some oddball size.

On to the injector O-rings, I left the injectors on the fuel rail as was advised here. Looking at the injectors, I only see one O-ring:

Where's the other one? I did a search here, but the link to the how2 injector o-ring replacement thread is broken . Is there a second O ring or do I just need the one?

The other one is in the fuel rail still on the other side of the injector.

Thanks, so I guess the injectors need to come off of the fuel rail then.

    Nope, you dont have to.

If you dont take it off the o ring wont get damaged and is already sealed, I just leave them.

So just replace the lower ones that go into the manifold and leave the ones at the fuel rail alone? I dunno....not in a big rush to finish this job, only working on it a little each evening. Waiting on the FelPro water pump gasket from Rock Auto. The one that came with the Bosch water pump is as thick as copier paper, the Fel Pro has a silicone bead and looks more substantial.

Question on the T-stat: I got two gaskets, one oblong with bolt hols and the other is a round rubber thingy with a groove in it that goes around the t-stat. Doesn't seem like I need both, do I?

If you got time, replace all the o-rings.

I only use the rubber gasket around the thermostat.
