Fort the last year or so, the "service engine soon" light has come on. The first time, hooked the car up to a code reader. Spit out code: PO440. Purge valve(system) related. Replaced the valve solenoid located near the rear top of intake cover. Light did not come on for several months. The last month or so, it has come on and sometimes goes off by itself after a few days. Same diagnostic code. Is there some other element in the system that might be at fault? I have been regarding it as "the boy who cried wolf" syndrome. Is this a typical problem for a 100K plus milage engine? It's driving me crazy. Thanks in advance, Chumley

Start checking over all vaccum lines that relate to the evap system.

Maybe even buy a new gas cap.

Thanks, where is the charcoal canister located on 2001 Grand Prix? I think I'll start with the solenoid under the hood and work my way back.

The canister is near the driver's side back wheel. You can google a diagram to show you exactly where it is.

Check your gas cap. I've had an EVAP code caused by a loose cap. I don't remember if it was that code but it's something easy to check. Also check the o-ring on the gas cap, they can crack and cause a vacuum leak.
