A bullet in it?
It sounds like it's dying...don't let it suffer.
Yea, that sounds like a rod just wanting out. Probably spun a bearing. Have you been loosing coolant or anything? Oil full? Not milky looking on the dipstick?
Look up grand prix rod knock on YouTube to compare the noise. Sounds just like it to me. Time for a new long block. You can get a used motor for around $3-500 depending on the year/mileage. Then change the LIM gaskets, valve cover gaskets and grommets on it while it's out and drop it in.
Unfortunately not tommyD. Once they start knocking, the best course of action is to replace it.
Agreed. If you try and replace just one rod/bearing assembly then the chance of it living for more than 100mi. is slim. These bottom ends are extremely picky on things like line bore, bearing thickness, etc.. Besides, if the crank is scored on this rod then you have to have the crank turned or it will spin it again.
In the end you could just get a longblock (entire bottom end w/ the heads still on it) and then install all the rest of your stuff to make it complete. Might get away with about $400 total there between the purchase of the longblock, new gaskets where NEEDED, and fluids. If you cheap out and try to shortcut it, it will die again eventually, and probably wait until you are the furthest point from home so it will include a nice towing bill on top of the new motor.
i think thats what im going to do is get a new motor
