I had to buy a new engine for my car recently and im going to pick it up tomorrow. I will have the engine in my posession for a couple of days so im trying to figure out what i should do to it before i put it in my car.

What about non-engine related things i should do?

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    -Ryan

    Drink some beer.

Are you taking it out from the top? Get rid of Dexcoolant, check your engine mount, how many miles are on the car or what year is it? There's a lot you could do but won't know until you get in there and look.

The possibilities are endless, but we really could do with a bit more information to make some sound suggestions.

are you saying you want to make your car faster or look better?

take everything apart and port and polish the heads, lim, and manifolds. remove your egr.

take everything apart and sand it down to paint it.

Alright, im wanting to know what i should do to the motor while it is out so that i dont have to pay a mechanic $600 to pull my engine in 3 months to change something small and simple.

Or what are some maintenence things i can do while i have such easy access to everything. New valve-cover gaskets, spark plugs, o2 sensor, etc.

The engine is out of an '03 monte carlo with 73k miles on it.

Sorry i wasnt specific enough :P

I'd take the opportunity to change the timing chain damper.

What exactly happens when a damper breaks? I've heard of the chains getting some slack and breaking them but what damage does it do? If its not broken, why would i still need to replace it(if i should)?

Potentially, if the damper breaks, the chain could slack up and slip or break as well. These are interference engines and that means the piston could come up and meat a still open exhaust or intake valve. Now you need to pull the heads and possibly need a new bottom end.

Depending on the mileage of your new engine, you might want to do it since it'd be easy with the engine out.

Since it's a used motor.... Along with the mounts you should change the VC gaskets, the oil pan gasket and all of the intake gaskets.

Also, the actual car has about 180k miles on it. Any suggestions for non-engine fixes?
