    Hi everyone.

My wife's 2005 base GP has been whining for a while. After reading lots of forums, and lots of test-driving, it appears it is the power steering pump that has eaten itself. I just moved into a new house, and now I have a garage (albeit not a very large one), so I am thinking I'll do it myself. Anyone have any experience tips before I take down her car?

I have a 73 Duster that I got when I was 16 and have rebuilt it completely for the last 9 years, so I am not afraid to dig in there, but it has been a while since I did any work on a newer car.

    Thanks in advance!

the PS steering pump is held on by 2 12mm bolts(if memory serves me correctly). you have to go through the PS pulley with a socket in order to get to them.

    first thing is first.

    1. disconnect battery for safety

    2. take serpentine belts off

    3. take off alternator (ease of getting pump out)

    4. Jack up front of car, and support it with jackstands

    5. take off passenger side tire
take cap off of PS pump resivoir(back of engine under where alternator used to be)

    6. disconnect PS lines(best to have a few rags and perhaps a bucket under car to help aid in capture of excess fluid) take your time, try not to round fittings.

    7. NOW, there are only 2 bolts holding it on. one on the bottom can be taken out from the lower wheel well, while the top...can be a bit of a pita. you can either go in through the top of the engine, or try through the wheel well. you have to spin the pulley around to manuver the socket through the holes to reach each bolt.

    8. once you have removed pump, it is oppsite of removal for installation. only when installing the new pump...have both bolts already in bolt holes on pump I had found it better to start the lower bolt first. that way you are able to swing the top around, and thread them in with your fingers using the socket with extension. then go back in and tighten them both down with sockets/wrench..that way you wont have a chance of crossthreading.

    9. hook PS lines back up(make sure fitting does not crossthread), with cap off of PS pump. fill it with propper PS fluid, until cap says full. then with key in ignition(do NOT start car) turn wheel in full rotations to the left and right...15times....this should get air bubbles out of the system recheck fluid level. it doesnt take a lot of fluid

    10. put everything else back on(including PS cap)....start vehicle...turn wheel left and right 5 more times, turn off vehicle. recheck fluid level. recheck PS lines for leaks. if no leaks are found, great job, now put the old pump back in the box, and return it for a core charge. and grab a bear and sit down. like to add, if you have small hands....this job should not be a problem...

    11. a Haynes manual is most helpful!!! great bed time reading.... Hope this helps you out. it is really simple!

I will have pics of this soon as I had to change mine out 2 days ago.....nothing like -5* ouside!!!

This is a good writeup and I probably don't have much to add on the process. But the two hardest things I found were getting the old pump out of the engine bay. I had to turn it every which way and try to squeeze it out every little hole. But I removed the dogbones and pulled the engine forward, like some do to change plugs, and that helped to get it out the top. Oh, I had to take off my coolant resivor and STB too. But this was on my L67, so not sure if that changes anything. The second thing was lining up the bolts in the PS pump. This was the first time I had it off and it was a PITA. Now, I can get them just fine. But the first time sucked. As with anything car related, it just takes time and patience.

Overall, not a hard job. Took me about 2 hours to do totally. But I also replaced the PS lines at the same time.

Did you replace the lines with the normal hard lines or did you use some stainless steel braided lines. I have been wanting to go get some made for the Power Steering, I just dont know how well it would work out.

Also, where did you get the lines from if they were the OEM ones?

Thanks to everyone for the great responses. I definitely have a better feel for what I am going to get in to. I will be getting the new PS lines while I am at it. I'll keep everyone posted on the status, it will probably be done the next warm weekend after this one.

I got my lines from Ed Morad (email him at GTPED@msn.com). I had a leak somewhere and couldn't tell where it was coming from for a long time. It was just a slow leak. And my PS pump started going out and so I just replaced everything. Now it doesn't leak and works great!

    X2... i had this happen

started to notice slow drip, small puddle after car was parked for awhile. looked under car, noticed drip from center of car, steady drip, didnt change with turning wheel --- return line was rubbing on 3" dp, wore through enough for a crack to develop in the line!

My pump on my grand prix failed and sent enough shrapnel through the system to ruin the rack to, I'm glad I still have warranty...

but good luck, and if you are in a cold climate get a waste oil heater for that new garage

Will a pump from a Series II engine fit on the series III?

It should. But Ed would be the one to tell you for sure....

Or, goto Autozone, look up PS pump for both cars and see if they are the same part number. I would bet they are.

I checked out autopartswarehouse.com for the power steering pump part numbers, and they are different. They show one for 2002-2003 and one for 2004-2005 (or something like that).

You may be right...but this is what I just found.

On Auto Parts Fast at RockAuto

    1997 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP - PS Pump w/ Reservoir - AC Delco #36516303 (#26085815) - $99.79

    2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GT - PS Pump w/ Reservoir - AC Delco #36516303 (#26085815) - $99.79

    2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP - PS Pump w/ Reservoir - AC Delco #36516303 (#26085815) - $99.79

    2005 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP - PS Pump w/ Reservoir - AC Delco #36516303 (#26085815) - $99.79

So they appear to be all the same. I would say looking at Rock Auto...they are all the same and should be interchangeable.

Thanks for this post, it's the best answer to my problem. My 05 GP has been making noise from the p/s pump since the warranty expired. I'm mechanically inclined so thi shouldnt be a problem to replace. Thanks UR Losen for the detailed description.

I found this thread with big brother G and decided to join! I'll make this my intro thread as well. Between my wife and I, we've owned 7 Pontiacs since 1990, 4 Grand Am's and 3 Grand Prix's. They have been sporty looking cars and generally priced well.
However, we have had our share of problems, mainly electrical. Seems like we replaced alternators or batteries every third year or so. I don't know what it was, and mainly the GP's not the Grand Am's, but they ate alternators like crazy?
The reason I found this post, I just bought a 2005 Gt used from Carmax (avatar pic). 27k miles, very clean, stole it for $11.2k. Anyway, I added their warranty for $1400 or so realizing that within 2 years I'd be having them slap on a free alternator just like my previous 2000 Gt. About 3 weeks after taking it home, I had to jump into traffic (floor it for a left turn from standstill) and I heard a horrendous whining and car started lurching like it was running on 4 cylinders.
I take it in, they tell me it's the power steering pump and they replace it free of charge.
I pick it up, the following day, it's still making a whining noise but not lurching or anything. I take it back in a week later and point it out, they tell me...

"Oh, that's the noise GM power steering pumps make."

...it's been 15 years since I worked on a car, and that was a 73 Monte Carlo that I could store my toolbox and small children in the engine compartment while driving.

I am stuck due to the warranty stipulations, even getting an oil change at someplace other than Carmax may void it, so I can't take it to my *very good* mechanic. I am stuck with "oh, that's the noise they all make."

What's next? "Oh, it's not supposed to start every day," or "oh, the tires are supposed to fly off when you drive on the highway."

I had a hell of a time finding the dam reservoir too. I'll wait for the engine to cool down now and look further down under the back of the block and check for obvious things.

I think I'll have to suck it up and forfeit the warranty and take it to my guy. I want my car fixed right. From my experience they have enough issues on their own without sub-standard service making things worse.

I have an 05 GP with 46km and I had a whining noise from my PS pump as well. Turns out it was just low on fluid and i haven't had the noise and haven't had to add fluid since. (A year ago roughly).

BTW - My dad has an 08 GP which had the same noise.
