    How hard is it to replace the rear main seal on a 2004 GP. Is it possible to do without pulling then engine/tranny? I didn't notice anything until last night when I lifted the car on the jack to do my front brakes. When the front was lifted, a bit of oil was leaking onto the ground and appears from between the engine/transmission. I was told by a friend its most likely a rear main seal, but that he didn't think that had oil against it? Anyone else have an opinion on what it could be?

    One of the two has to come out. Flex then comes off. Have a rear engine cover gasket, oil change and coolant on hand when you get that far. Reason I say that is, I've typically found on the higher mileage motors...it's not usually the rear main crank seal. It's the rear engine cover gasket. GM put the bolts on with about 5ft lbs of torque and no locktite. Slow but sure they seep.

    Recently went after the leak on mine. It looked like a rear main cause the flex appeared wet. Once I got in there...it looked like only the rear cover gasket. I did both (got the stuff laying around) and she's been dry since December when I did it.
    I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

    I'll take another look at it before I decide what to do. Strange thing is that it doesn't leak when sitting flat, just started when it was up on jacks? Why would this be? It could also be coming from somewhere else too and just ran down the side in that area too?

    It could be the oil pan gasket as well. That'll be easy to do if you have the motor out to do the rear seals. For the oil pan just get some ultra black rtv and run a bead on the upper and lower side of the existing gasket.
