    Hello all,

I'm a new member here from Central Texas, just posted a hello and some pics in the intro section.

My wife has a really sharp 2001 GP GT with the Special Edition package. It's got 150K miles, and has been a great car, but just recently developed an odd problem. 95% of the time, the first time you turn the key to start the car, it will start and then stall right out. You turn the key again and it starts right up and runs like a watch.

There are no codes. No CE light. I'm stumped. Other than this issue, the car runs and drivers perfect. So far I've done a full tune-up, including Delco plugs, wires, air and fuel filter, pcv valve, and had the fuel system cleaned/flushed at a shop. I also replaced the EGR valve, after a friend suggested that "might" be it.

I'm not sure how this could be related, but I recently did a lot of other work and had the car somewhat torn apart, and this cropped up soon after. I had a bad oil pan leak, and replacing the pan gasket was a PAIN, and also the power steering pump, one line, and the entire rack were replaced, along with both front CV axles (I know, it was overkill, but once I got started I kept going).

Anyway other than the weird start-stall-start again and then run fine issue, the car is a champ. Would really like to sort this out. Any ideas are appreciated!

    -Mike

Sharp looking SE. I like it!

Cleaned the MAF on it recently?

Try this and tell me if it starts any better or same. Turn the key to "on" and let the fuel pump prime. Then turn the key off and back to on again and let it prime again, then try and start it.

Have you pulled the vac line off the FPR ever?

If fuel comes out, then that is your issue.

And cleaning your MAF couldnt hurt either.

No I've not cleaned that. It's just the unit between the air filter box and the intake, correct? How do you clean it? Just take it off and wipe it out, or do you use carb cleaner or something?

Glad you the car, and thanks for the advice!

Sorry to sound stupid, but what is the FPR.....fuel pump regulator? Is it on the fuel rails on top of the intake? If I pull the line and fuel comes out, do I just need to order a new FPR....?

    Thanks again for the reply.

The MAF is the black sensor that is in the top of the TB. You will need a safety torx bit to remove it. Once out, use approved MAF cleaner (avail. at all autoparts stores). Do not use carb or TB cleaner as it could damage it. Also, just spray the small wires inside the MAF, don't touch them with anything to clean them. Then just let it dry 100% before you reinstall it.

The FPR is the Fuel Pressure Regulator. And yes, it's on the fuel rail in the front towards the left side (drivers) of the motor. Yes, if fuel comes out then just buy a new regualtor.

don't forget to use throttlebody cleaner on the throttlebody if the plate is black instead of shiny brass.
Irridium spark plugs last 100k mi and work just as well as copper. Copper is a waste on N/A and only lasts 15k mi. Don't use Platinum.
Use 195* tstat unless you can thoroughly explain why not; 99.9% don't need a lower temp.
Almost any oil filter, ever, is of higher quality than ACDelco. Spend $6+.

Try all the simple stuff first and if that don't work replace the crankshaft position sensor that was the problem with mine.

Try unplugging the MAF and then start the car and see if it will run.

well it turned out that i needed a fuel pressure regulator. So if u recently changed the spark plugs, pcv valve, fuel filter and did a fuel system cleaning like i did and if u was still having the start then stall then start again and runs fine problem with no check engine light on, then u should check out the fuel pressure regulator
