hmm not letting me upload more photos...
Hmm well this goes to anyone who has done an intake setup like this. I never really cared to do an intake setup because the truth is on a N/A engine, you will only gain a few more HP, and that may be because the previous filter was not as clean as your new cone. (like changing a stock filter, you will get a few more HP from a new stock one) Anyway if there really is a positive sound difference, I may consider getting one. As of now, the only intake noise I hear is a sucking sound when my high idle is on. Other than that it's all just engine noise resonating through the block/exhaust system. What type of noise do you start to hear, exactly? I know it was described as a "rumble" but I'm not sure what that means. Anyway I wouldn't mind spending a bit for a better sound, is it really worth it?
Truth is a Intake won't due much in power that you can really feel. Its a SUPPORTING mods so it helps if you have some mods already done performance wise then the intake MAYBE will make a differ in power. As for the sound it makes kind of a throaty sound, hard to describe but you got to try it to see for your self. I believe making your own CAI or WAI is worth doing just for fun and for something unique for your car and the sound is pretty cool. Plus if you got a GTP or something S/C or T/C, the Intake should make them sound really cool and there can be a more power gain from those cars compared to N/A car. Try it out, its pretty cool first mod when getting into moding cars.
An open cone air filter sounds awesome IMO. Sounds stock till about 3000rpm then it gets loud and has a nice grumble to it.
Yeah I do hear exactly how you described, throaty lol. Sounds good. Any way I can make it NOT a hot air intake? I'd assume routing it into the wheel well
That or I was thinking putting the cone filter into the stock air box and just cutting the top of the air box and the back off. That way it gets lots of air and the most of the hot air from the engine gets blocked off. I'm pretty sure hot air will still get to it but very minimum amount.
Just get the largest filter you can find and put it directly on the tb. That's what most ppl on here do.
Yes but I'd like the coolest air possible, I like the idea of getting the cone in the stock box, possibly modifying it. There's always a junkyard a few miles away with a dozen GP's if I wreck mine, I'm pretty careful though. I'll take a look tomorrow, the weather is supposed to be nice. Thanks for the idea.
I had a fender wall intake then switched to warm air intake, I saw a 0 difference between intakes.
I disagree. i can feel a harder kick in mine at just after the launch (2-3000 RPMs) and way more push in the 3k+ range. So much noticeable that the little bit of hard kick from the Trans ( 1st to 2nd shift) is no longer there. it feels like the shifting is happening a little later in the RPM range and is smoother( on normal driving).
As far as cutting up the airbox or the fenderwell, or cold air/hot air. i searched this forum 3 times over looking for which one to run. the guys on here running the best setup's all seem to agree( like Grimsin said). If you are going after power, then cold or hot doesnt matter, only volume and most importantly COST.. lol
my setup cost me under $60 and i LOVE the way sounds and looks.
All in all its what you want to do, i worked on a jeep for the last 2 years so i was excited to work on this, and so far its turned out pleasing.
finally got a photobucket so now i can upload more pics on my build
Just curious do you have a GT or GTP? Because installing a filter in a supercharged engine may prove to make a difference. Probably almost as much as a u-bend delete.
I agree with him^^^
When a car is T/C or S/C, every mod put into that car is going to be twice as better than in a N/A car. Thats why when modding the GP base it gives barely anything, and when modding the GTP gives it lots of power. AND THEY BOTH HAVE THE SAME DANG ENGINE, just S/C.
mine is an L36..
So its a N/A, read all about these engines right here
Buick V6 engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
what am i supposed to learn from that?
I just through out there, didnt see that it gives not much info on the L36. We had the L26 so it gave a lot on that.
gotcha
well i can tell you one thing... HD claps are a requirement on these things.
problems that arose.
painted PVC doesnt grip well. flimsy hose clamps will move... my intake fell off like 4-5 times.
yesterday as i went home to secure it with better clamps, it slipped off and brought the pipe with it.
pipe stayed out of the fans thanks to the IAT sensor but came to rest on the headers thus.....
Dang you are lucky it did not hit the fans. Just use the hose clamps on the rubber pvc, they worked great on ours. And after word Zip tie the intake to something solid to reduce all the movement.
