Hope this is the right place for this post.

Just bought a 01 Grand Prix GT w/ 82k. The guy was on the shady side and I think I made a mistake but that is my own fault and another story.

On the drive home the Check Engine light came on. I have a code reader and it popped up w / P0341 Camshaft Sensor.

The shady character said he had already replaced that part. I saw similar post around the web where owners replaced it only to have the Check Engine Light come on again. One post suggested something different:

"I talked with several GM mechanics who told me that the IAT sensor can short circuit and cause the problem. The sensor was only $14 and it just pops into the plastic tubing on the air intake. Changed the sensor almost 6 months ago and problem has not returned since."

Can anyone give me some advice on this? I really think I shot myself in the foot on this one but then I will defer to the more experienced members.

    Thanks

    Thanks
^ if this is true and the seller was truthful about replacing the sensor, it could be a pretty cheap fix and an easy replacement.

03 GTP...Its got pulleys and stuff.

Well that's just it, I have no idea what is up with this car. He said non smoker, found cigarette burns and dirty ashtray. No body damage, found bondo in rear quarter etc, etc. So who knows? I am new to Pontiac and have little knowledge of what to watch out for.

What is the cost to replace the Camshaft position sensor? I know the part is about $50, but don’t know how involved it is to install. I am pretty comfortable under the hood of a car but don’t know anything about this particular fix and or history of this problem.

    Thanks.

Go to gearchatter.com and search on the code. Then do whatever diagnostics and look at the schematics. If you can replace a cheap IAT sensor..then that's a better fix.

Another thing to consider is .. unplug the IAT. if it's bad, that'll eliminate it from teh possibliltes. Then reset the codes and see in a day or so if the cam sensor code returns. If all you have is IAT from it being unplugged. Then try swapping that out.

Cam sensor btw is 1 10mm bolt and it's down to the left of the water pump pulley.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

One more question....I will need to get this thing smogged here in CA before i can register it in my name. Doe anyone know if that Camshft position sensor issue will casue it to fail....assuming that is the onyl thing wrong.

It's a DTC code. Not sure about CA, but here in CT.. any code based on engine performance shoots you in the foot.

Same here in MO...even if it doesn't really directly affect emissions. Just have a code scanner with you...delete it right before you go in there LOL

If it winds up being the cam sensor I have a brand new Gm one here I can let go for $30 shipped to help ya save a little bit. Thought mine was bad too, wound up being something else.

The plot thickens - Just found out that the OD was tampered. The actual mileage is 176k. I'm totally screwed. The guy won’t take the car back but one small bit of justice, he is on the hook for any repairs to bring it to smog per CA laws. If he does not pay up, I take him to small claims. So at least I have recourse on that one thing.

I am a walking talking text book example of how NOT to buy a car.

Pretty sure you can take him to court for tampering with the Odometer... google it... "tampering with odometer" all kinds of legal sites and laws come up.

He definitely violated a few laws.

Update and end of the saga....the guy pretty much knew he was screwed if it went to court but I knew it would be very hard to recoup my money. Takes allot to track down the guy's work then get his pay garnished etc.

Long and short...he produced another Grand Prix. It’s a 99. It has 130k miles and is smogged and runs strong. Which is half the battle right there.

Now to fix all the broken crap......

Anyone have a bridge they want to sell? I would probably be a good candidate to buy....
