It wont rev up past 4000rpm, has a hard time shifting if you are trying to accellerate rapidly, if you feather the throttle it seems to be okay once you get up to highway speeds like maybe a clogged catalytic converter.
any ideas?
Thanks, Robert

Yes, the SES light came on when I was accellerating from a stop to get on the highway. Car went to 3800 RPMs, then it acted like a bad modulator valve on an old Ford trannie where it would just not shift. It seemed sluggish and lacking power. It also sounds like the valves or something is rattling in the engine when you try to press the accellerator. The lSES light came on, then went out, then came back on and went back out as I would feather the throttle trying to get it to gain speed and shift. It did it about 6 times over a mile in distance and about a minute in time.
I had to drop my daughter off at a youth event for church last night which was only about 6 miles from the house. When I got back in the car to come home, it started fine, no SES light but it had trouble gaining speed and shifting up because it just didnt have any power. When I got home, I removed the plastic cover so I could run the throttle and when I would rev it up, it would hit the 4000 rpm limiter but it would also rattle really profound when you would let off the throttle or when you would goose the throttle like a bunch of loose marbles.
Will SES leave codes even though its not on any more, my neighbor has a machine that will retreive them.
Okay, more info. I drove it this morning and it does the same thing. Starts Fine, Idles Fine, no SES light. I went down the road and if you press the accellerator to the floor it will go to about 3500rpms and not shift until you let off the accellerator. It will then upshift but has little power. Almost like it has been detuned when the traction control kicks in.
It has 160K miles on it. I changed the plugs and wires at 120K. It has a good air filter. It idles smooth nothing rough. Does not appear to be missing or sputtering when it is running under load.
I called my neighbor and he is going to try to pull codes on it later today, he has to run into his shop and get his scanner. I will let you all know what we find.
01 Clogged Cat issue...there is a recall for it IIRC...take it to a dealership...should be able to fix it for free.
really a recall that would work for my 01 with 160K miles on it, far out!!!!
If I could determine, I was thinking of drilling a hole in from of the cat, installing a grease zerk and pumping some grease in there and letting it burn out the cat then not have to jack with it ever again.
Crap, I just googled it and it says 10 years or 120K miles which ever comes first, so looks like I am over on miles, looks like its a case for the Grease Gun!!!
Well, no codes on the scanner. SES light has not come back on. Guess I will take it to a muffler shop monday and see if its the Cat.
Just cut it out...gut it...and replace. Plus on top of all that you'll get better MPG's
hey we were right, it was the CAT, it has been R&R and runs like new again. Thanks to everyone for their help on this. My 15 y/o daughter is so excited to be able to drive what will be her car when she turns 16.
