there will still be a few cars out there like the zr1, we went through this once before (anyone remember the '80s?)
I read the article earlier too. Performance cars wont go away. as long as there is a demand they'll make them. manufacturers will find ways with technology to make them better on gas. Heck look at a GTP. I get 29MPG highway and 23 mixed around town/highway. Not bad for a quick car. Compare it to my 79 trans am. 10MPG and my GTP would walk all over it.
Performance cars won't go away, they'll just change. I can definitely see cars starting to get lighter (they've become porkers anyway).
Biggest problem, though, is that we should have been steadily increasing economy and emissions standards since the 70's, that way the companies could have been focusing on cleaner technology all along. Now, they'll have to scramble to make high HP cars meet the new standards.
I wouldnt worry about it too much, CAFE is Corporate Average Fuel Economy, that means AVERAGE economy across every make and model by each given manufacturer. Cars that fall below this standard get a gas guzzler tax which already exists, just with lower standards. 35 mpg shouldnt be a big deal, that is 12 years from now and there is already a lot of cars really climbing in the gas mileage department. SUVs and Trucks are going to get hammered the worst, but the diesel trend will likely continue to grow and help out a lot. The reality is most people dont care what it costs to drive something that they want to drive.... Look at all the people driving Suburbans and such that get 10-12mpg in town and cost 40K+ new. Whatever manufacturers get pegged for gas guzzler tax just gets passed on to the customer.
Anyone remember the K cars?
There are proven ways out there to make cars, even in their current state, much more fuel efficient.
exactly, I am not worried, it will slow the new v8's coming out as they will need to be reengineered to get the economy, but the technology is there, it's just not cost effective yet
people are still racing Honda civics....... no matter what kind of car it is..it will be raced
