Hey guys! I owned a 00' Grand prix GT and sold it to my aunt. I just got a letter saying it has been recalled due to oil getting on the LIM and catching on fire! Just wondering if anyone else has got a letter or has this happend? It said it was only in the 00' NA cars.

I call it BS because of the way they're fixing it. They're saying that the oil can leak onto the exhaust manifold and catch fire, and the fire can get big enough to catch the spark plug wire channel on fire, so their fix is to remove the channel.

Oh ok... The fire will be big but at least the spark plug channel will be unharmed.

I don't have the manifold shield anymore since I put the Plog on, so I'm not even going to bother. If it leaks for me, it'll just run down to the ground.

Anybody have this done yet? I just got recalls on the '98 and the '01. Also got one for the '00, may she rest in peace....

EDIT: Forgot to mention these are all GTs with the 3.8L N/A engine.

This was a recent extension of the Fire recall to the L67-Engined cars...

in all, there was about 207,xxx L67-Engined cars under the initial recall. When they included the N/A 3800 Series II Engines, it pushed the recall to nearly 1.5 million cars.

I didn't know of the inclusion of the L32 and L26 engines though...

It doesn't affect Series III engines or 04-05 Series II engines. It's not an extension to the L67 recall since the repair is different. The L36 recall is BS since they just replace the plug wire channel. Getting the valve cover off is more labor time on the L36 than the L67 so they're taking the easy way out.

Actually, I'm looking at the letter, and it says:

Why is Your Vehicle Being Recalled? An underhood fire may be caused by drops of engine oil, from seepage or spillage, being deposited on the exhaust manual through hard braking. If the manifold is hot enough, the oil may ignite into a small flame and, in some instances, the fire may spread to teheplastic spark plug wire channel and beyond. If this occurs, there could be a fire in your vehicle and nearby property.

What Will We Do? Your Pontiac dealer will replace the spark plug wire channel with new spark plug wire retainers. This service will be performed for you at no charge. Because of scheduling requirements, it is likely that your dealer may need the vehicle longer than the actual service correction time of 15 minutes.

Sooo......it sounds like they are only replacing the plastic piece with metal clips that won't burn when the oil drip catches fire?? And folks are scratching their heads about why GM is in such bad shape.....

Like I said, more work to do the valve cover gasket on the L36 so they decided to take a BS way out.

I also feel this fix is bull, instead of replacing the gasket that could leak they are just diverting the leak elsewhere to save money. I guess that's why they are going out of business though.

Had the recall on my '01 taken care of last week. They gave me a real hard time because I had aftermarket wires that were thicker and threatened not to do the recall procedure unless I bought new wires from the dealership and had them install them. After much banter back and forth, they finally completed the recall with my thicker wires. God I hate my local Pontiac dealership, I called and complained to GM main office about the treatment. Was told they have no control what the dealerships do!?!?!? It's no wonder they are filing bankruptcy. Love my Ponti but will never buy or go back to my local dealership ever again, if possible!

I wouldn't have even bothered if I had different wires. Just pull the wire channel off. That's really all the recall does.

id received one for my 97 gt also the letter is still sitting on my desk... i figure if it hasnt happened yet under my heavy braking i should be good to go on my 10 year old car... and it gives them less chance to mess somethin up under there anyway... some of the dealers over here with them goin out of business... i wouldn't put it past them to try and get a return trip from me for somethin else they break
