Have a 2006 grand prix with a brand new theromostat and a flushed heating system. Car does not get very warm inside at all. There is no pressure in the heating system as it was drained. The heat that comes from the blowers is warm, but not warm enough to keep the car warm on cold days. The engine gets to where it should be. Anti freeze is full and new. Only thing wrong is my radiator cap does not release any pressure. Been trying to change it but T46 which all parts places list as a replacement does not fit.
any suggestions?
No warning lights , engine runs fine. Just doesnt get warm.
Whats the proper rad cap number? Maybe the car was in an accident before I bought it.
thanks

I've seen this be a clogged heater core. Especially if the prior owner didn't change the coolant regularly or used stop leak. How was the system flushed? Just by adding flushing compound, or using a garden hose at the heater core?
How was the coolant bled? Could be trapped air in the system.
Less likely, but could be the blend door sticking. Is it always the same temperature, and if it's dual climate control, is it different on each side?

They did it at an oil change place that ran new water, but I dont think it was to heater core . The air was bled by opening the rad cap and then turning that little screw by the thermostat until no more air came out. The guy who did it knew what he was doing. The air is the same temperature , both parts of the climate are cold. I think it could be the blend door. Ocasionally if I turn the car off for a few minutes and then start it again it will get super warm.

get the engine up to temp, then touch both heater hoses, if one or both are cold or only warm the core is air bound.
both hoses should be almost to hot to grab and hold on to.

IIRC the heater core on the 04+ is higher than the tstat housing?? I remember there being something about the heater core being a serious pain to get the air out of.

Flush heater core alone can be done by disconnecting both hoses at alternator bracket. Core can be pre-filled by slow pouring right into one of the hoses until it comes out the other. Then plug it with your thumb and just quickly reconnect to alt bracket.

Thanks,
I watched a guy on YouTube do it. He flushed it right behind the coolant tank. The intake and out hoses are right there. Could that work too?

The alternator bracket is right by the coolant tank if yours is by the belt, so yes, you can flush with these two hoses. That's the easiest point anyhow.

It was warm today here, only -15 Celsius, so I got some hose and flushed it using CLR and then a flush with water. I have no water hose so I couldn't do that. It works amazing now! Thanks for all your help everyone.

Hey I'm in sask and own a 2005 with the same issue, the temp needle barely climbs at all. I did flush the core with just water (back flush), and nothing really came out, and I put a thermostat in from Napa. Do these cars take forever to warm up? Where should the need be at when it hits 195, at the 1/4 mark?

Sadly our temp gauge is always way off. I always use a scan tool to check. How did you flush and bleed the system? And by long, what time do you consider long?

Bled the system with the rad cap off (thermostat has a hole), and I drive around for about 30 min and the needle gets to just the small 2nd tick

And your coolant is full? I'm guessing you don't have heat through vents either?
How did you flush the cooling system? Sometimes the bottled flush doesn't work.
What does the temp say with your scan tool?
Have you replaced your thermostat lately?

Heat is luke warm at best. I used the garden hose through both heater core ports on the firewall. I’m going to use the IR gun and see and the thermostat was done before the flush, it’s a 195*

did you fill the hoses with water when you put them back on? if not the core could be air bound again.
run the car for a bit then touch both heater hoses, both should be hot, if ones cold, the other luke warm or hot, you still got air trapped in the lines and core.
shoot that temp gun at the t stat housing. its cold out so its not out of the norm that its sitting at 195 or less. your fans wont turn on till 212º.

I don’t think the system was bled well enough, I have a delco thermostat I’m going to swap in this morning, along with the CLR treatment in the heater core

Thumbs up on the AcDelco thermostat. Have a picture of when I swapped mine comparing to the stant one on my build thread. The difference is crazy!
Good luck!

Just running car up in the shop, both heater core hoses are hot as all hell now, how much do I bleed out from the bleeder valve? Till liquid comes out?
