ok, im not going to mention the car im using this motor in, but i have a 3100 in my car at the moment and i was looking at doing a motor swap with this engine, instead of the 3800 supercharged( cant find a single one of these around me). does this engine have a supercharger available? if not what turbo would you reccomend to get the best power out of it? when i get the engine im replacing all of the crank and cam bearings and the piston rings since im getting it out of a junkyard car that was rear ended. is there anything else anyone can come up with besides intake and exaust to make a monster of an engine out of this?

i had one. never again. funny when they first designed these engines in like 91 they didnt have a trans strong enough to hold the engine. they cut power back so the trans would hold up. i know the valves are made of sumthing special and they are lightweight. i also kno this is a non interference engine. they have a great oiling system. also there is a timming belt. i dont like replacing the altenater on these its at the bottom in the rear on the pass side...... i have a supercharged 3800 now and i would not do anything with a dohc 3400 except a boat anchor. sorry my opinion.

I have the 3100 in my car and it hasn't been the worst engine, but its got its faults. The 3400 with a 3400 transmission will hold up FINE if you're just looking for a high mileage everyday driver.

My father just bought a 2005 Impala with the 3.4 and he told me he's never owned a smoother, more efficient engine. So the swap would work, just get a transmission to go with it.

I've learned on these forums, if you don't have a 3.8, good luck...

like miked said bout the de tuning GM did i dont know how much time you want to put into getting the power back that they took away prob with restrictive exhaust, intake and PCM then going for mods to get it up to 3.8-SC power levels might take a wile but I would like to here about it if you do its something different for sure.

Were in the process of throwing a cammed 3800 S/C and hd tranny in a 1993 lumina. It can be done and is probably easier in the longrun to make the power levels you want.
