1. my point was that my 3100 with a few hundred bucks into beat a stock 3800... and i believe his car is newer than mine, im just saying that 3100's do perform well and theirs no reason for so much hate on them
2. exactly! im not taking it to the track i just want a nice dd with good gas mileage but still has some kick to it if i want to beat on it a bit
I had feared that installing the larger TB would impact my fuel efficiency, but I just did a trip from Rochester, NY to outside of Washington DC just shy of 500 miles on one tank of gas. I documented 31.4 MPG with a trunk full of firearms, ammunition and full tactical gear. NO complaints on how my 3100 does the job.
You are exactly correct^. I added the magnaflow dual exhaust in place of the OEM single exhaust with the U Bend delete, NOT to race my 3.1 GP, along with the K&N airfilter in the stock air cleaner housing, to increase driveability on the street, NOT to race the car. The point is a lightly modified 3.1 can be easily made fairly equivalent to a stock 3.8 single exhaust V6 pretty easily for short money-I have done it and have multiple examples of 3.8's both with single and dual exhaust as a comparison that I have OWNED previously and which I drove approximately for 50,000 miles each-They were company cars!
A few other points:
1. Claims that 3.8's do not have LIM problems or head gasket problems is blatantly untrue! Do a search on 3.8 owners with these issues.
2. There are hundreds of thousands of 3.1 owners with zero issues with long longevity with this motor-There are also hundreds or thousands of 3.4/3.8 owners with long longevity-Any of these motors will last a long time if taken care of and not routinely taken to the track-None of these motors were designed or intended to race. If you want to race, get a V8.
3. I can tell you from personal experience driving my 3.1 for over 100,000 miles and the other 3.8 cars for about 150,000 miles combined (total of 250,000 miles 1/4 of a million miles in total on 3.1/3.8 motors) that changing a 3.1/3.8 single exhaust motor to freeflowing duals with a u bend delete in the exhaust makes a big difference in power that can be felt on the street driving. Again, going from a single exhaust to freeflowing duals, NOT getting rid of the GT's duals and going to freeflowing duals-no experience with that conversion.
4. Claims that going from a u Bend delete/Magnaflow duals on a 3.1 will result in 20 HP less than a stock 3.8 which makes 200 stock Net HP are ridiculous. A stock 2001 3.1 GP makes 175 HP and doing the math claimed it would make 20 HP less than a stock 3.8 or 200-20=180 HP or a 5 HP gain.
5. Putting duals on a 3.8 GT versus the stock duals may be all about looks but it is NOT all about looks on my 3.1 with a single exhaust and going to high flowing duals with a U bend delete. My 2004 Impala LS 3.8 single exhaust would barely accelerate on the highway in top gear with the A/C on (without downshifting). My modified 3.1 will actually pull in top gear with the A/C on in top gear (no downshifting) now with the exhaust change-it takes HP to do that and not 5 HP!
6. A stock 3.8 single exhaust W body car will NOT beat my 3.1 as described above on the street. I know from my experience with other 3.8's owned and from others that have them now.
The point is that people that want the same driveability from their 3.1 as a stock 3.8 (NOT Modified) can easily do it for short money and should not be discouraged from doing these minor changes. It is NOT about racing but increasing driveability. Hope that helps!
actually ive found seen some guy online who dynoed his 3100....lol but still after he did just an exhaust and an intake, it gained 11 whp...not a whole lot by any means but still not that bad.
I wasnt arguing with what you have been saying.
but he said"he did just an exhaust " which could mean many things....did he just do a catback? or did he have plog/headers,downpipe,ubend delete.... id like to know more exactly work exhaust work was done.
Monte man... You are clearly convinced you are right and no amount of evidence will convince you otherwise.
Make no mistake: There are few folks on the forum that insist that the 3.1 is a piece of s**t and the only engine worth anything in the GM world is the "mighty" 3.8 V6-Not in a million years! Just ignore them and maybe they will stay in the "mighty" 3.8 section. I find the whole 3.8 thing somewhat comical since the 3.8/3.1/3.4 GM V6's are NOT performance engines by any stretch. Prior to just recently, GM's real performance engines are their V8's and now the caddy 3.6 V6 and the camaro V6 with over 300 OEM stock HP. Ford and Chrysler also make pretty decent V6's now but to argue about the great 3.8, give me a break!
Sorry for the long winded rant now, but here is my current view on performance motors, and cars in general. My street racing days started in the early 1970's. Mustang 302, Camaro SS 396 and Z/28 302. All while still in High school. I was the ultimate gearhead then. My Z/28 I built that with the right tires would pull the front wheels off the ground 6 inches hitting second gear. The first phase of my take on street racing was to be the fastest, no matter what I came up against. This is a no win deal. The guys with hemi cudas, cobrajet mustangs and a daddy with more money to invest than I had did beat me. The next phase was in the 80's to have a car that would outrun a police car.(dont ask, I did no so good things then). I survived that which leads me to current take on street racing. I want a car that when up against a same body type and displacement, I will have the edge. I think I could beat most 3.1 types out there. This is where driving skill, handling comes into play as well. All I am saying is performance is relative when comparing apples to apples.
I think only reason people would prefer a 3.8 over a 3.1 is if they wanted a wide variety of mods, as the 3.8 has alot more choices. if i was thinking of buying a car and one was 3.8 and the other a 3.1 id take the 3.8 for the extra power(stock vs stock) and mod selection.
BUT if i had a 3.1 i wouldnt swap out for a 3.8 cause its not a big jump in power.
Well said! I too started my car craziness in the late 70's with a Nova SS with a 350 V8 and an automatic. I have had lots of cars in between then and now and pretty much have a car fetish. I reserve my racing to road racing in the skip barber racing series. I guess I am perplexed but some of the juvenile comments made about the GP 3.1 V6's. Any engine can be modified and yes there are many more mods for the 3.8 but the 3.1 is actually the better drive for everyday driving with gas at $4.00 per gallon.
what is that in miles?
like 450-500, thats about what i get and im getting about 32-35mpg i might be in the low 400s but still even if you baby the 3800 you would see those numbers..i in no way baby my car what so ever and get amazing mileage
JBAMonte trolled on here awhile ago...claiming mufflers added 10+ WHEEL HP on his car. He has been gone for quite some time since he couldn't EVER prove anything with hard evidence other than...I FEELS TONS FASTER AND I BEAT CARS THAT PROBABLY DIDNT KNOW I WAS RACING.
Also...I hope he knows that a single outlet exhaust 3800 probably is more efficient than a Y'd off dual outlet 3800....lol.
Something I LOL at most often...but copgtp hit the nail on the head here: So much misinformation I can't even begin to comment.
Tell you people what...I'll quit hating when you provide me with video's of your 3100's beating 3800 cars...and their dyno charts proving the gains your claiming.
Also dpzelenak...I averaged over 29 mpg driving to Iowa and back in my heads/cam GTP making probably 3 times as much power as your 3800...ujellybreh.
