Thread: Charging Issues

Hi All

I have a 2005 Grand Prix GXP 5.3L. It is charging between 12.8 and 13.9. It goes over 14.0 only when you start the car goes up to 14.4 for a few mins and then goes back down in the 13's and 12's when it is warm out. When it is cold out it goes up to 15.20 and eventually comes back down to 14.4. Please help me.

My guess would be alternator is going out. Go to a AutoZone or advance auto, most can do a check on your alternator, if it will stay charged enough to drive it there. Our Chevy venture van had issues like that, voltage was all over the place, and the tester said something was wrong with the alternator overcharging. 12.8volts is pretty low, and 15+ is high. In the 13's and 14's is normally where you want it.
