Under hard throttle at what RPM? are you actually hitting the rev limiter or what rpm does it do this? I don't get your issue. Need more info.
I think Scotty nailed it. Trans is starting to go.
Thanks for all the reply's -I'm posting this for a friend who doesn't have internet service(shame on him!) By the way he is a 20+ year mechanic -BUT not a tranny tech -this is his wife's car -he is driving trying to figure out what's going on, The rev-limiter kicks in @ 4500 rpm
below 4500 rpm the tranny shifts OK - so the car is drivable -as long as you don't get on it! Even with his mechanical background -he is stumped
thanks again for all the input

The rev limiter is programmed into the pcm. Dont see how that would suddenly change. You have other issues, possibly ignition related but hard to say without knowing exactly what its doing. Could be as simple as plugs/wires.
if a 20+ year mechanic cant figure out it needs a tune up, oh boy o boy.
ask the guy if the check engine light flashes when he floors it. that means misfires, clogged cat, or its in need of a tune something fierce.
maybe its one of those things where the spouse is saying: "honey my car is broke." and the mechanic asks: "what is wrong with it?" and the reply is something ambiguous.
