The transmission in my 2006 Grand Prix GXP is getting replaced by a shop. I was wondering what the proper term is for the shift learn or adapt, and the proper was to reset this. I dont exactly trust the shop to do this replacement right but as its under warranty, I got no choice in the matter, but I am going to be on them like white on rice on doing right. They arent exactly an actual shop, just a used car dealership with a shop area. Warranty is sending them a new (remanned) trans to put in. Ive been doing some reading here and the thing Im seeing alot is that the ecm needs to be told to relearn these shift settings when a new trans is put in or else the old adapt settings could be to much for the new trans.

    Sumamry:

Whats the proper term or technical term for this adapt or relearn setting in the ecm?
Whats the proper way to reset this setting? (Some say unplug batt for an hour and turn key over for 30secs, some say needs to be done with tech tool.)
What should I check/feel for when I get the car back to make sure it was done properly?

thanks in advance to everyone, this site's been really helpful and informative thus far

Technical term = TAPS which is Transmission adaptive pressure
To reset = the battery can be left un-hooked for an hour, or it can be reset with a scan tool.
You probably won't know the difference if it was done or not. Unless it adapted to a really bad transmission previously. It will adapt on its own whether you reset it or not. Resetting it will start it from scratch.

Honestly if the shop is like you say it is, I'd be more concerned with things like, are they using fender covers to prevent scratches, are they keeping things clean, etc.

all you do is drive it, the trans will re learn as you drive. every time you take the battery off long enough for the pcm to clear and reset, its all relearning. and the neg cable will be off for longer then 30 minutes while they swap the tranny out. so its all good.

thanks for info guys, makes me feel better. It was a bad trans before, it had been slipping on me and the gf everytime we went up hills at 35-65 and 1500rpm to 2200rpm, then didnt wanna catch gear at a stop sign, banged into gear, barked tires, got down street to house, parked, restarted and it wouldnt drive. Then kept tryin in for a cpl days before tow truck came, wouldnt budge, well tow truck guy shows up throws er into gear and drives right up flatbed, blew my mind... oh and that ass hit the bed with the front splash shield and scraped my exhaust tips then tried to say he didnt do that and he tows things all the time... anyways, I would certainly hope they pull battery for that. We'll see in next cpl of days or next week, warranty company said the trans should be at shop today. (crossin my fingers)
